Women's tennis begins 2018-19 season with shutout win at The College of Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (1-0) kicked off the 2018 season by rolling to a decisive 9-0 win over The College at Brockport on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tigers opened the match by winning all three doubles matches in decisive fashion. The second doubles duo of Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) shutout Heather Phillips and Liz Bean, 8-0, while the first doubles team of Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), knocked off Zoe Sharp and Automne Venturino, 8-1.
 
Ying and Ginster are coming off a 2017-18 season in which they won 15 doubles matches.
 
RIT's third doubles team of sophomores Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) and Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) earned an 8-2 victory over Jen Kiely and Pheobe Morse.
 
In singles action, RIT dominated, winning all but seven points, while taking all 12 sets. Ying (first singles), Zablonski (fifth) and Steinbrink (sixth) won by identical, 6-0, 6-0 scores. Zablonski picked up right where she left off last season after tying a school record with 20 singles wins.
 
Taylor made her RIT singles debut by rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the second position, while Ginster picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at third singles and Casalnova won 6-2, 6-1 at the fourth spot.
 
"Today was a great way to start off the new season," said RIT head coach Tom Linhart. "We looked sharp in all areas and executed well. We are excited to see how we compete next weekend at the very competitive Mary Hosking Invitational at William Smith."
 
RIT is back in action next weekend at the Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith College. Action begins on Saturday, Sept. 8.
