ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (2-0-0) women's soccer team exploded for four second half goals to defeat Allegheny College (0-2-0) by a score of 4-0 on day two of the 2018 Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament from sunny, hot Tiger Stadium Saturday. Four different Tigers scored, including newcomer
Lauren Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), who tallied her first career goal.
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) and
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) each tallied a goal and an assist for the Tigers, while freshmen Zeglen and
Maggie Hoey (Charlotte, NC/Lincoln Charter School) each scored for RIT, who dominated play all afternoon, out-shooting Allegheny, 24-2. The Tigers took six corner kicks to three for the Gators.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) picked up her first collegiate win in net for RIT, making two saves. Kaitlynn Rees took the loss for Allegheny, making five saves.
RIT had several good chances in the opening half, out-shooting the Gators, 10-0, but the two teams headed to the intermission scoreless.
The Tigers would respond in the second half with four goals in just under 25 minutes of play to earn the weekend sweep. Zeglen gave RIT a 1-0 lead on her first goal of the season in the 59th minute.
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) sent a service in from the flank that White got a piece of inside the box to keep it alive. The ball caromed right to Zeglen, who poked it home from close range to give the Tigers an early advantage.
White gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead on her first goal of the season off an assist from
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) in the 73rd minute. Polanco sent in a cross that White gathered. She scored from the ground after being taken down by a Gator defender. Roberts made it 3-0 RIT when she converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Hoey made it 4-0 on her second goal of the weekend to close out the scoring 24 seconds later. Roberts and
Olivia De Luca (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) assisted on the goal.
RIT defense was stout again on Saturday, allowing just two shots on target for its second straight clean sheet. With the win, RIT is 5-0-1 all time versus Allegheny.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when the Tigers play at No. 20 Misericordia College at 7 p.m. RIT will play the hosts and Farmingdale State College on Sunday, Sept. 9 as part of the Misericordia Tournament.
