ROCHESTER, NY -- Freshman
Maggie Hoey (Charlotte, NC/Lincoln Charter School) scored off an assist from classmate
Lauren Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) in the 80th minute to propel the RIT (1-0-0) women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Denison University (0-1-0) Friday afternoon on day one of the 2018 Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament Friday. It was the season-opening game for both squads.
The Tigers had several chances throughout and were unable to break the scoreless tie late in regulation. Zeglen sent a ball in from the flank that Hoey gathered and fired into the top corner. Patti Tcholakian got a hand to the shot, as the ball went just over the line, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Originally, play went on and no goal signal was given. After a few seconds, the head referee stopped the clock and conferred with the linesman and determined that it was a goal.
Shots were 14-6 in favor of RIT. The Tigers fired six shots on net to just one for Denison. Corner kicks were even at five apiece.
Ingrida Ivaska (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) picked up her first collegiate win for RIT, making just one save. Tcholakian took the loss for the Big Red, making four saves.
RIT's generated a good scoring chance early in the first half when
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) and
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) combined to generate a shot on target. White fed Thiel who fired a shot on net, heading for the corner, but Tcholakian stretched and turned aside the shot to keep it a scoreless game.
Abby King had the Big Red's best chance with a little under 11 minutes remaining in the opening half. She whistled a shot just wide of the target. Kate Dannemiller had a chance late, but her shot went just wide.
The Tigers controlled much of the play in the second half, generating three good scoring chances. White and
Katelyn Woolley (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) broke in 2-on-1, but White's thru-ball to Woolley was just out of the sophomore's reach.
Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) sent a ball through to
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) with 26 minutes remaining. Polanco ran onto the ball and shot first time, but Tcholakian came off her line and made a great diving save.
Denison had a strong flurry late in the game, but RIT's defense stayed strong and cleared away the danger.
With the win, RIT is unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven season openers, dating back to 2012. Overall, RIT is 7-1-1 in season-openers under current head coach
Liz Masterson.
Today marked the collegiate debuts for
Shannon Brown (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville),
Rebecca Hext (Ottawa, ON/Longfields Davidson Heights), Hoey,
Jessica Wagner (Millis, MA/Millis) and Zeglen
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 1 when the Tigers face Allegheny College at 3 p.m. on the field at Tiger Stadium to wrap up the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament.
