Men's soccer begins 2018 with resounding win over St. John Fisher at Doug May Classic

RIT honored 1988 national runner-up team at halftime to celebrate 30-year anniversary

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (1-0-0) men's soccer team scored twice in the first four minutes, including a goal 17 seconds into the contest en route to a 3-0 win over St. John Fisher College (0-1-0) to open the 2018 season at the Doug May Memorial Soccer Classic from RIT's Turf Field Friday evening.

The Tigers honored members of the 1988 men's soccer team who celebrated their 30th anniversary of leading RIT to the Division III National Championship Game. RIT finished that season 16-1-1.

Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Alec Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) and Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each scored for RIT, who held a 17-3 shot advantage. Garno added an assist, while Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) picked up his first collegiate win in goal, making two saves. Joe Catalfamo took the loss for Fisher, making four saves.

RIT dominated the opening half, out-shooting Fisher, 13-1 while scoring a pair of goals.

It did not take long for RIT to open the scoring. Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY/Hilton) was hauled down inside the Fisher penalty box just 17 seconds into the game. Simone stepped up and buried a shot into the corner to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.

Jackson tallied his first collegiate goal off an assist from Garno in the fourth minute to make it 2-0 Tigers. That score held up until the latter stages of the game when Garno ripped a free kick from 19 yards out that beat Catalfamo cleanly into the far corner.

"We are very happy with a 3-0 result against a tough St. John Fisher side that did not quit," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "It was a great start getting into them so quick. After a let-down, I was happy with how we responded and showed toughness to keep the clean sheet."

RIT's defense held the Cardinals to three total shots, including two on target.

Tonight marked the collegiate debuts for Jackson and Pete VanCamp (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas).

RIT returns to action on Sunday, September 2 when the Tigers host SUNY Brockport on RIT's Turf Field at 7 p.m.
