Men's lacrosse wins seventh straight Liberty League Championship, 23-3 over Ithaca

Tigers qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year and 21st time in program history

ROCHESTER, NY -- The top-seeded RIT (18-0) men's lacrosse team won its seventh straight Liberty League Championship with a 23-3 win over No. 3 seed Ithaca College (15-3) in the 2018 Liberty League Men's Lacrosse Championship from RIT's Turf Field Saturday afternoon. The Tigers have won seven straight Liberty League titles, and nine straight overall. RIT earns the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament for ninth straight season. Senior Kyle Killen (Peterborough, Ontario/Crestwood Secondary) was named Tournament MVP.

Shots were 44-27 in favor of RIT, as they also won the ground ball battle 40-27. The Tigers won 21-of-29 face-offs, went 18-of-24 on clears. RIT the top man-up unit in all of Division III, was an impressive 5-of-6 on its man-up chances.

Killen and Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary) each scored four goals for RIT. Killen set the single-season goal record at the univiersity, tallying his 70th goal of the season with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. He surpassed the previous record of 69 set in 2011 by current assistant coach Tyler Russell. Jay Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) finished with two goals and two assist, while Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) and Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) each scored two goals.

Nate Farrell (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) won 9-of-12 face-offs and had seven ground balls. Eli Salama (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) caused four turnovers, while Alex Maruna (Medina, OH/St. Ignatius) and Matt Pogue (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Paul Secondary) caused two turnovers apiece. Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) improved to 18-0 on the season, making seven saves.

Ryan Ozsvath, Greg Drillock and Kaelan Fitzpatrick each scored a goal for the Bombers, while Robby Atwood took the loss in net, making four saves.

"I am so proud of this group," said RIT head coach Jake Coon. "They came out and were excellent in all phases of the game today, from offense, to defense, to face-offs. The guys stepped up today and I could not be any happier for this group."

RIT came out firing in the first quarter, leading 9-0 after 15 minutes of action. Nally scored the Tigers first goal, on the man-up off an assist from Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) early in the quarter. Milburn and Isaac each scored two goals in the quarter for RIT, while Farrell, Killen, and Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) each scored.

Nally and Vakiener scored two goals to begin the second quarter, extending the Tigers lead to 11-0 on Vakiener's goal at the 12:49 mark of the quarter. Drillock broke the RIT run, scoring off a feed from Conner Crosson with 9:17 remaining in the first half. Fitzpatrick added a goal for the Bombers later in the quarter, while two goals each from Killen and Milburn, along with a tally by Patrick Shoemay (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross) gave the Tigers a 16-2 halftime lead.

RIT scored the only four goals in the third quarter, opening up a 20-2 lead on a goal from Luke Smeltzer (Halifax, NS/The Gunnery) with 1:26 remaining in the quarter. Killen broke Russell's record on a goal off an assist from Commandant to open the scoring in the third quarter.

Tait scored two fourth-quarter goals, while Luke Henderson (Hespeler, Ontario/St. Benedict's Catholic) scored his first of the season with 6:37 remaining.

The Tigers went over the 300-goal plateau on the season in today's win. They also reached the 20-goal plateau for the fifth time in 2018. RIT out-scored Ithaca 42-12 in the two contests between the two schools this season.

RIT will await its opponent in the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. The selection show can be seen on NCAA.com, Sunday, May 6 at 9 p.m. The Tigers are making their 21st appearance in the national championship and are the defending national runners-up.
