Women's lacrosse picks up critical Liberty League win at St. Lawrence

Tigers move to 3-2 in Liberty League play

CANTON, NY -- The RIT (5-5, 3-2 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team went on the road Tuesday and beat St. Lawrence University (3-5, 1-2 Liberty League) 16-11. The win snaps a two-game losing skid by the Tigers and moves them into fifth place in the Liberty League standings.

Shots were 29-23 in favor of RIT, who also won 19-of-28 draw controls. The Saints held a 20-17 ground ball edge, while RIT went 16-of-18 on clears, and converted 5-of-12 free position attempts. Tied 5-5 in the first half, RIT ran off eight straight goals, including seven straight to end the half, to break the game open.

Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Tigers with six points and three goals. Kendall Jones (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) scored four goals, while Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) tallied three goals. Colette Rigas (Marietta, NY/Marcellus) and Brooks Melnyk (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) each scored two goals and Steph Darrell (East Norhtport, NY/St. Anthony's) had a goal and two assists. Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) caused five turnovers, won two draw controls, scooped up four ground balls and added an assist, while Rigas won six draw controls. Paulina Goodemote got the win in net, making six saves. 

Rachel Boghosian led St. Lawrence with five goals, while Campbell Armstrong tallied four goals. Olga Lukas took the loss in net, making nine saves.

Armstrong gave St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead with 21:04 to play in the opening half on her goal. RIT scored four straight goals in response, taking a 5-2 lead on a goal from Jones at the 11:22 mark of the half. Jones scored two of the Tigers four goals, while Krystyna Sterio (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Livecchi each tallied.

The Saints tied the game at 5-5 with 8:34 remaining on the second of two straight goals from Boghosian. The Tigers would close out the half with a flourish, tallying seven straight goals. Fallone scored two straight, giving RIT a 7-5 lead on her goal off an assist from Darell with 7:32 remaining. Livecchi converted a free position goal to make it 8-5, and Jones scored two straight to extend the Tigers lead to 10-5. Fallone converted a free position attempt, and Brooks Melnyk (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) scored with 55 seconds remaining in the half to give RIT a 12-5 lead.

Rigas opened the second half scoring with her goal at the 28:38 mark extending the RIT lead to 13-5. The Saints ran off three straight goals, cutting the RIT lead to 13-8 on Boghosian's goal with 22:02 to play. Goals from Melnyk, Rigas and Livecchi down the stretch sealed the win for the Tigers.

The win is the first for RIT over St. Lawrence since the 2015 season. RIT returns to action on Friday, April 6 at Vassar College. Game time is 4 p.m.
