SCHENECTADY, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (9-6, 3-4 Liberty League) secured a berth in the 2018 Liberty League Championship Tournament with a 7-2 win over host Union College (5-10, 1-7 Liberty League) from Sportime Courts on Friday afternoon.
RIT opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to build a quick lead.
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) earned an 8-5 win at first doubles over Megan Brown and Natalia Pezzuco, while
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) and
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) picked up an 8-4 win at the second position over Julianne Loree and Alissa Sangiuolo.
Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Maddy Price (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) made it a doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at third doubles.
Zablonski picked up her 18th singles win of the season, 6-0, 6-2 over Sangiuolo at the fourth position. Ying would clinch the match for RIT, winning 7-5, 6-2 over Pezzuco at first singles.
Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Julia Smolowitz (Marlborough, MA/Hudson) would add singles victories. Steinbrink picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles, while Smolowitz won 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 at sixth singles.
The Tigers are right back in action on Saturday morning at Bard College to wrap up their Liberty League regular season schedule. The match gets underway at 11 a.m.
