ROCHESTER, NY -- The top-ranked RIT (16-0, 8-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season in style with a 17-7 win over Union College in the rain Wednesday afternoon from RIT's Turf Field. The Tigers earn the top seed and a first round bye in the Liberty League Tournament, which begins this weekend.
Shots were 47-43 in favor of RIT, who won the ground ball battle 38-26. The Tigers won 15-of-27 face-offs, went 22-of-25 on clearing attempts and finished 0-for-2 on the man-up.
Senior
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, Ontario/Crestwood Secondary) led RIT with eight goals, giving him 63 on the season. He becomes the tenth Tiger in the 50-year history of the program to reach 60 goals in a season. Killen needs six goals tie and seven to break RIT's single-season record of 69, set by current assistant coach
Tyler Russell in 2012.
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) tallied three goals for the Tigers, while
Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) scored two goals.
Nate Farrell (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) won eight draws and had four ground balls, while
Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) won seven face-offs.
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) led the Tigers with five ground balls.
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) improved to 16-0 on the season in net, making a career-high 18 saves.
Charlie McGovern led Union with two goals, while Sam Bebout took the loss in net despite making 15 saves. Alex Newhouse won 10-of-20 face-offs and had seven ground balls for the Dutchmen.
Both teams exchanged goals early in the opening quarter. Commandant gave RIT an early lead on his goal off an assist from
Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) at 13:57. Hayden Frey tied the game at 1-1 on his goal at the 12:20 mark. The Tigers ran off six straight goals to end the first quarter leading 7-1. Goals from Killen (2), Commandant (2),
Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) and
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) gave the Tigers a six-goal cushion.
McGovern scored two straight for the Dutchmen to begin the second quarter, cutting the Tigers lead to 7-3 on his second goal of the quarter at the 12:17 mark.
Jay Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Killen sandwiched goals between a Sean Patterson tally in the latter stages of the first half that gave the Tigers a 9-4 lead at halftime.
John Edmonds opened the second half with a goal off an assist from Jordan Cooper at the 11:38 mark of the third quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 9-5. Killen scored three straight goals for RIT to end the third quarter. His third of the quarter off an assist from
Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) extended the RIT lead to 12-5.
Barnable continued the scoring run for RIT with his goal to open the fourth quarter. Killen scored off an assist from
Matt Pogue (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Paul Secondary) at the 9:53 mark of the quarter to give RIT a 14-5 lead, and
Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, Ontario/Trinity-Pawling) gave the Tigers a 15-5 lead on his goal with 8:30 remaining to put the game away.
The Tigers improve to 20-3 all-time against Union. RIT finished the regular season with an undefeated record for the third time in the last five seasons and fourth time under head coach
Jake Coon.
RIT receives the first round bye in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament. The Tigers await their opponent in the semifinals to be played on Wednesday, May 2 on the campus of RIT.
