CANTON, NY – The No. 1 RIT (15-0, 7-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse clinched at least a share of its seventh straight Liberty League regular season title with a 15-13 win at No. 19 St. Lawrence University (10-4, 4-3 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon. RIT led 11-3 at halftime and held off a furious second-half comeback by the Saints, who outscored the Tigers 10-4 in the second half.
Shots were 46-30 in favor of RIT, who also held a 40-23 ground ball advantage. The Tigers were 14-of-16 on clears, went 2-of-5 on man-up and won 26-of-31 face-offs.
Five Tigers tallied three points Saturday.
Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, Ontario/Trinity-Pawling) tallied three goals, while
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, Ontario/Crestwood Secondary) and
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) each had two goals and an assist.
Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) had a goal and two assists, while
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School),
Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary) and
Julien Guay (Oakville, Ontario/The Hill Academy) each scored two goals.
Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) won a career-high 24-of-26 draws and had 11 ground balls.
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Conor Caffrey led St. Lawrence with five points on three goals and two assists. Nick Brindisi tallied three goals, and Alex Terry made five saves in 32 minutes of action. Matty Corbelle made five saves in relief.
RIT led 5-2 after the first quarter. Commandant gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on his goal off an assist from Riley at the 10:53 mark. After a Saints goal tied the score at 1-1, the Tigers ran off four straight goals, taking a 5-1 lead on Milburn's goal with 2:06 to play. MacDonald tallied two goals in the quarter for RIT.
The Tigers tacked on six goals in the second quarter to lead 11-3 at halftime. Guay scored two goals in the quarter. Tandy gave RIT a 6-2 lead on his goal early in the second quarter. He fired a shot low into the corner from 10-yards out. After a Brindisi goal cut the RIT lead to 6-3 at 8:07 of the quarter, Guay scored, scooping up a ground ball in front of the St. Lawrence net and scored to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead. MacDonald made it 8-3 on his third goal of the half off an assist from Tandy.
Commandant gave the Tigers a 9-3 lead on his transition goal at the 4:07 mark. Spillane won the face-off and got the ball to goalkeeper
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville). The Tigers cleared the ball, eventually finding Killen who fed Commandant with a one-time pass and scored in the open net.
Salama made it four straight goal for RIT, tallying with 3:55 to play, and Guay scored his second goal of the quarter to extend the RIT lead to 11-3. Shots were 23-14 in favor of RIT who won 12-of-16 face-offs and held a 19-11 ground ball edge.
MacDonald led RIT with three goals in the opening 30 minutes, while Commandant and Guay each had a pair of goals. Hare made four saves in net, while Spillane won 10-of-11 draws.
Killen opened the scoring in the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 12-3 lead on his 53rd goal of the season. The Saints rattled off four straight goals, cutting the RIT lead to 12-7 on Dow's man-up goal with 6:07 to play in the quarter. Peterson, Jennings and Caffrey each scored in the run for the Saints.
Riley broke the St. Lawrence scoring run on his man-up goal off an assist from
Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) with 5:43 remaining in the third quarter. Sam Boehle tallied a man-down goal for the Saints, cutting the RIT lead to 13-8 on his goal with 3:39 remaining in the quarter. Killen gave RIT a six-goal lead on his behind-the-back goal with 2:42 remaining in the third. He got around his defender and fired a shot off the crossbar and in. Killen got his own ground ball and fired a shot from behind his back to give the Tigers a 14-8 lead. Milburn scored a man-up goal off an assist from Tandy with 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give RIT a 15-8 lead.
The Saints came storming back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 5-0 in the quarter. Caffrey scored the first of the Saints goals in the fourth quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 15-9 on his goal with 13:42 remaining. Mike Donnelly made it 15-10 on his goal with 12:36 to play, and Brindisi made it 15-12 on two straight goals at 10:38 and 8:27 respectively. Harrison Koch made it a two-goal game on his goal with 6:13 remaining to make it 15-13 Tigers.
The Tigers were able to run out the final minutes on the clock to secure its seventh straight Liberty League regular season title.
RIT closes out the regular season on Wednesday, April 25 when the Tigers host Union College at 4 p.m.
