ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's tennis team (6-8, 0-5 Liberty League) led throughout the match before falling to St. Lawrence University (6-9, 2-4 Liberty League), 5-4 at the Midtown Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
Before the match, RIT honored seniors
Jared Ingoglia (Essex Fells, NJ/West Essex Regional) and
Ben Lynaugh (Fairport, NY/Fairport).
RIT got off to a strong start, holding a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Lynaugh and
Nick Lim (West Caldwell, NJ/West Caldwell) rolled to an 8-3 win at second doubles over Arman Tavana and Joshua Marvald.
Spencer Lowitt (Syosset, NY/Syosset) and
Roger Peckham (Westlake, OH/Lake Ridge Academy) secured an 8-4 win over Alec Roslin and Spencer Whitmire at third doubles.
After St. Lawrence tied the match at fourth singles, Lowitt and Lynaugh won consecutive matches to give RIT the 4-2 lead. Lowitt defeated Spencer Whitmire at third singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Lynaugh won a stirring three-set match at second singles at Leo Romanetz. The two student-athletes traded 6-3 wins in the opening two sets, before Lynaugh won the third and decisive set, 7-5.
The Saints would respond and win the next three matches to take the match. Ingoglia and Eric Tecce went to three sets at first singles, while Tecce winning the decisive set. Roslin and Mamelak closed out the win for St. Lawrence.
The Tigers play their final home contest of the 2017-18 season on Tuesday against Liberty League rival Hobart College from the Gordon Field House at 4 p.m.
