Second half comeback falls short as women's lacrosse loses opener at SUNY Oswego

OSWEGO, NY -- The RIT (0-1) women's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season with a 15-13 loss at SUNY Oswego (2-0) Monday afternoon. The Tigers late second half rally came up just short.

Shots were 31-29 in favor of SUNY Oswego. The Lakers held a slight 18-17 ground ball advantage, while the Tigers won 15-of-23 draw controls. RIT went 15-of-21 on clearing attempts, and committed 19 turnovers. 

Senior Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with six points on four goals and two assists. Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) scored three goals, while freshmen Colette Rigas (Marietta, NY/Marcellus) and Kendall Jones (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) each scored a pair of goals in their collegiate debut. Brooks Melnyk (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Maegen Schmauder each tallied a goal and an assist.

Jones led the Tigers with four ground balls and Savannah Clemens (Livonia, NY/Livonia) caused four turnovers. Senior Jordan Guerrieri (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) caused two turnovers. Rebekah Snitkoff (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) took the loss in net, making two saves. Pauline Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) played the final 41:06 and made six saves in her collegiate debut.

Brigid Regin led Oswego State with five goals. Teresa Shattuck tallied seven points on three goals and four assists and Toni Laneve chipped in three goals. Angela Ponto picked up the win in net, making nine saves.

Trailing early in the first half, RIT tallied three straight goals, taking a 3-1 lead on Fallone's goal at 23:14. Jones got the Tigers on the board with her first collegiate goal at 27:12, and Livecchi scored her first on a free position attempt at 25:46.

Oswego State rattled off nine straight goals, taking a 10-3 lead on Laneve's goal with 7:32 to play in the half. Fallone broke the Lakers run with her second goal of the half with 3:16 to play. Livecchi scored late in the half to cut the Oswego State lead to 11-5 heading into the break.

RIT scored the first two goals of the second half, cutting the Lakers lead to 11-7 on Schmauder's goal at 26:50. Fallone tallied her third of the game to open the scoring in the second half. After a Shattuck goal, goals from Melnyk and Jones puled the Tigers to within three goals at 12-9.

Regin scored two of the Lakers next three goals, including one at 16:03 that gave Oswego State a 15-9 lead. The Tigers made a game of it late in the game. Rigas tallied her first collegiate goal with 15:41 to play to cut the lead to 15-10. Livecchi scored two straight goals at 4:53 and 2:24 of the half, and Rigas scored her second of the game to make it 15-13 Oswego State with two minutes to play.

RIT returns to action on Sunday, March 11 when the Tigers take on Ramapo College in Englewood, Florida at 5 p.m.
