Women's lacrosse loses first Liberty League game at No. 16 William Smith

GENEVA, NY -- The RIT (4-4, 2-1 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team fell, 14-9 to No. 16 William Smith College (6-3, 4-0 Liberty League) at Boswell Field Wednesday afternoon. It is the Tigers first loss in Liberty League play this season.

Shots were 33-21 in favor of William Smith who also held a 21-8 ground ball edge. The Tigers won nine draw controls and went 14-of-16 on clears.

Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with three goals and four points. Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) tallied a pair of goals, while Colette Rigas (Marietta, NY/Marcellus) and Krystyna Sterio (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each had a goal and an assist. Rigas won six draw controls, and Liz Bova (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) each had two ground balls. Rebekah Snitkoff (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) took the loss in net, making 12 saves.

Sarah Benyo and Melissa Moore each scored six goals for the Herons. Ali Burns and Ellie Burns each scored a goal, and Jules Kennedy got the win in net, making seven saves.

Fallone gave the Tigers an early lead, converting a free position attempt 53 seconds into the game. The Herons tallied two straight goals, taking a 2-1 lead on Ali Burns' goal at 20:41. Livecchi scored two straight, giving RIT a 3-2 lead on her free position goal with 16:05 to play in the half.

William Smith scored four straight goals to end the half and hold a 6-3 lead. Moore scored three straight, while Ellie Burns scored with eight seconds remaining in the half to give the Herons a three-goal edge.

William Smith opened the second half with three straight goals, taking a 9-3 lead on Benyo's third goal of the half. Sterio broke the Herons run with her free position goal with 23:32 to play. Rigas cut the lead to 9-5 with her goal at the 19:50 mark.

After a Benyo goal made it 10-5, consecutive free position goals from Steph Darrell (East Norhtport, NY/St. Anthony's) and Livecchi made it a three-goal deficit with 14:34 to play. The Herons responded with three straight goals, taking a 13-7 lead on Benyo's fifth goal of the game with 8:39 to play.

The Tigers showed their fight, scoring two straight goals late in the game. Meghan Donahue (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) scored off an assist from Rigas to cut the William Smith lead to 13-8 with 3:50 remaining. Fallone scored off an assist from Livecchi with 1:17 to play to make it 13-9. Benyo scored with six seconds remaining to make it a 14-9 final.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 31 when the Tigers face Rensselaer at 12 p.m. in Troy, N.Y.
