Baseball suffers first loss of 2018 season, falling to No. 1 UMass-Boston

AUBURNDALE, FL – The RIT baseball team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the 2018 season, falling to No. 1 UMass-Boston (6-0), 9-2 at Lake Myrtle Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
The top-ranked Beacons scored three runs in the third inning, four times in the fifth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-0 lead. Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to provide RIT's offense.
 
UMass-Boston out-hit RIT, 11-2. Dave Murphy led the Beacons by going 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, three runs scored and four RBIs. Kyle Boudrias was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Ryan McCormick had two hits and two runs scored. J.T. Morin pitched four scoreless, hitless innings on the mound for the Beacons, striking out six batters. Mike Doherty came on in relief to earn the win, allowing two hits and two runs in four innings.
 
RIT was held without a hit until the eighth inning. Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) was hit by a pitch before Schulz's home run. Dalton Murray (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) also singled later in the inning for RIT. Brian Reed (Rochester, NY/Penfield) earned the start and took the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned), while striking out three batters in five innings. Collin Reformat (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) closed out the game for the Tigers.
 
Murphy broke open a scoreless game with a three-run homer in the third inning. In the fifth, the Beacons scored four times on three hits, a walk and an error to make it a 7-0 game. Murphy hit his second home run in the seventh inning.

The Tigers will get a chance to exact revenge on the Beacons right away, as the two teams meet once again on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
