ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (17-3, 11-2 Liberty League) women's basketball team defeated St. Lawrence University (14-6, 9-4 Liberty League) 63-54 in Liberty League action from Clark Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. It was the sixth straight win for the Tigers, who inch closer to clinching a postseason berth.
RIT shot 39.3 percent from the floor on 24-of-61 shooting. The Tigers made 9-of-24 from beyond the arc, and went 6-of-14 from the foul line.
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) led RIT with 19 points, all coming in the second half.
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) tallied 17 points, while
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) chipped in 13 points.
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) tallied eight points and had seven rebounds.
Abby Judd (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) led the Tigers defensive charge with four blocks.
Lynch is now 12 points shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Katie Gallagher led St. Lawrence with 17 points and four rebounds. Annabelle Pugliese tallied 11 points, while Katie Frederick grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds for the Saints, who shot 33.9 percent from the floor.
Trailing 34-29 at the half, RIT rallied to outscore the Saints 18-6 in the third quarter, taking 38-37 lead on 3-pointer from Glaz with 3:39 to play in the quarter. Okada's jumper with 2:52 to play in the quarter extended the RIT lead to 44-39. Lynch drained a 3-pointer late in the quarter to extend the Tigers lead to 47-39.
Jenny Scudder's 3-pointer with 7:06 to play in the fourth quarter cut the RIT lead to 49-47. Okada drained a 3-pointer at the 6:20 mark of the quarter to extend the RIT lead back to six points. Frederick cut the RIT lead to 56-54 on a pair of free throws with 3:39 to play. RIT responded by scoring the final seven points of the game to go on to the nine-point win.
The Tigers tallied 26 points in the paint, and seven second-chance points. RIT avenged an earlier loss to the Saints two weeks ago.
RIT's 17-3 record is the best in program history over the opening 20 games of a season.
RIT returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 6 when the Tigers host Ithaca College at 6 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
