ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team (10-15-2, 9-11-1 AHA) suffered a 5-2 loss to visiting Bentley University (10-13-6, 7-11-5 AHA) at the Gene Polisseni Center Saturday evening.
Kyle Schmidt had a four-point night, tallying a hat-trick, while adding an assist for Bentley, while Jonathan Desbiens and Drew Callin also scored. Goaltender Aidan Pelino made 31 saves for his eighth win of the season.
Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) and
Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) scored for the Tigers, while
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) assisted on both RIT goals.
Ian Andriano (Barrie, Ontario/Ottawa Jr. Senators) made 22 saves in net.
RIT out-shot Bentley, 33-27. The Falcons were 1-for-2 on the power-play, while RIT was 1-for-3.
"Our execution was not very sharp all weekend," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We were hesitant in everything we did and give Bentley credit, they were very deserving of both wins."
Schmidt scored a pair of goals for the Falcons in the first 4:33 into the contest to quiet the Polisseni Center crowd. He opened the scoring just 40 seconds in, getting behind the RIT defense and slipping a shot past Andriano for his 10th goal of the season. He then fired in a slap shot from the right wing moments later to make it 2-0.
Cameron cut the Bentley lead in half with 5:01 left in the period, as he collected a loose puck at the Falcons blueline that glanced off the skate of
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals), cut to the net and roofed a shot over Pelino for his fourth goal of the season.
Bentley would answer just 38 seconds later, as Desbiens collected a rebound in the slot after Andriano made the initial save on Ryner Gorowsky and fired a low shot into left corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season, making it 3-1 Falcons.
Bentley added to its lead with 6:28 left in the second period, as a shot by Chris Buchanan deflected off an RIT defender and the skate of Drew Callin in front and in. Callin was credited with the goal, his sixth of the season to make it a 4-1 game.
RIT out-shot Bentley 17-6 in the third period, but Pelino kept the Tigers at bay, making 16 saves, including a big pad save on
Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) at the doorstep on a power-play early in the period.
Schmidt would score a power-play goal for the Falcons to make it 5-1 with 9:20 to play. Valenzuela would answer with a power-play goal of his own for the Tigers with 4:29 left, snapping a wrist shot from the left circle just under the crossbar an in. Powell and
Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) assisted on the goal.
Desbiens scored a pair of goals to lead Bentley to a 4-3 win over the Tigers last night at the Polisseni Center. RIT leads the all-time series, 21-15-2.
RIT is back in action next weekend, Feb. 9-10 with a pair of road games at Atlantic Hockey foe Robert Morris University. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
