ROCHESTER, NY -- In a battle for second place in the Liberty League standings, the RIT (12-12, 10-7 Liberty League) men's basketball team was defeated by Union College (15-8, 11-6 Liberty League) 79-70 Friday evening on the floor of Clark Gymnasium. The Tigers fall to a tie for third place with Ithaca College with one game remaining in the regular season. Union clinches second place in the Liberty League regular season standings.
RIT shot 41.9 percent from the floor on 26-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-19 from beyond the arc, and were 11-of-16 from the foul line.
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) led RIT with 25 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tallied 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, recorded a career-high seven blocks and added a steal for the Tigers.
Kevin Weckworth led Union with a game-high 31 points. Garrett Johnson tallied 24 points off the bench, while Kevin McNoble chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Dutchmen, who shot 40.7 percent from the floor.
RIT trailed 44-31 at halftime, shooting 33.3 percent from the floor. The Tigers led early in the half, taking an 18-11 lead on a jumper from Aguilera at the 12:54 mark. Johnson gave the Dutchmen its first lead with his 3-pointer at the 8:27 mark fo the first half. McNoble gave Union a 39-23 lead on his bucket with 3:23 to play to cap off a 28-5 run that ultimately swung the momentum. Lewis converted a free throw late to cut the Union lead to 44-31 at the break. Lewis led the Tigers with 16 points.
RIT opened the second half with a 10-2 run, cutting the Union lead to 46-41 on a layup by Aguilera with 16:29 to play. Aguilera cut the Dutchmen lead back to five points at on his layup with 15:22 to play. Matt Liquori answered on Union's next possession, giving the Dutchmen a 51-43 lead on his 3-pointer. Brendan Laing extended the Union lead to 62-45 with 11:02 to play, capping off a 14-2 run.
Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 2:57 to play to cut the lead to 73-66. RIT would not get any closer as Union made its free throws down the stretch.
RIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Tigers host Bard College at 4 p.m. The Tigers will honor the class of 2018 (
