Women's hockey has winning streak snapped by Boston University

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (5-9-4) had its two-game winning streak snapped by visiting Boston University (7-4-4), 3-1 from the Gene Polisseni Center Friday afternoon.

Jesse Compher had a goal and an assist to lead the Terriers attack, while Natasza Tarnowski and Sammy Davis also scored. Goaltender Corinne Schroeder made 27 saves in the win.

Madison Farrand (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) scored RIT's lone goal on the power-play in the second period. Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep), who had a game-high six shots, assisted on Farrand's goal. Taylor Sims (Deep River, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) also assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point. Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 26 saves in net for the Tigers.

Boston University out-shot RIT, 29-28. The Terriers were 2-for-6 on the power-play, while RIT was 1-for-5.

"I thought we came out with good focus and played well, but made a few small mistakes that were the difference," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "We need to come out a similar intensity and be better on the special teams tomorrow."

RIT had a golden chance a minute in, as Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) made a strong burst down the ice to win a loose puck and fire shot from the slot that Schroeder stopped. Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) had two strong chances later in the period, one off a giveaway in the Terriers zone and the other at the tail end of a RIT power-play. Both were smothered by Schroeder.

Boston University would get on the board first with 4:31 left in the opening period, as Tarnowski stripped the puck off a Tigers player in the Terriers zone and sped up the ice on a 3-on-1 rush. She would fire a shot from the right side that beat Lanteigne short side, just inside the right post for her first goal of the season.

The Terriers would score two power-play goals before the halfway point of the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Just 3:57 into the period, Davis would take a cross-ice feed from Compher and fire a wrist shot past Lanteigne for her ninth goal of the season to make it 2-0. Compher would score on the rush off a pass from Abby Cook with 10:08 remaining in the period to extend BU's lead to 3-0.

RIT would get back into the game with a power-play goal of its own moments later, as Farrand redirected a low, hard slap shot from Rushton past Schroeder for her second goal of the year. Taylor Sims (Deep River, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) also assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point.

Lanteigne kept it 3-1 with two incredible saves late in the period, first on Kristina Schuler on the doorstep and second on a deflection by Alex Allan.

RIT would pressure the Terriers throughout the third period, holding a 14-8 edge in shots, but could not solve Schroeder. Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) had a point-blank chance denied early in the period and had another great opportunity from in close stopped late in regulation.

Boston University leads the all-time series between the two schools, 2-1-0.

RIT and Boston University wrap up the weekend series at noon on Saturday from the Gene Polisseni Center.
