ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 15 RIT (6-0, 2-0 Liberty League) women's basketball team defeated Union College (3-2, 1-1 Liberty League), 66-59 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon from Clark Gymnasium. The Tigers opened the year with six consecutive wins for the third straight season.
RIT shot 41.4 percent from the floor on 24-of-58 shooting. The Tigers made 6-of-19 from beyond the arc, and made 12-of-18 from the foul line.
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) led the Tigers with 22 points, while
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) added 15 points, while
Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) tallied 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) had seven assists to go along with four points.
Nicole Conley led Union with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Joana Santos tallied 11 points, while Amber Raisner chipped in 12 points off the bench for the Dutchwomen who shot 43.4 percent from the floor.
RIT fell behind 10-9 at the 4:12 mark of the first quarter, but outscored the Dutchwomen 23-9 over the final 14:12 of the half to lead 32-22 at the break. The Tigers shot 42.2 percent from the floor in the half. Juergens and Lynch led the Tigers with eight points apiece.
Union got as close as six points in the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Darby Leid with 7:03 remaining. The Tigers responded with a 10-2 run, taking a 46-32 lead on a layup from Stanley late in the third quarter. Union made a late-quarter run, cutting the RIT lead to 48-42 on a pair of Conley free throws with nine seconds remaining.
Conley cut the Tigers lead to 48-44 on her bucket early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers tallied nine straight points, increasing their lead to 56-44 on a 3-pointer from Wolfe with 7:29 remaining in regulation. The Tigers made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the seven-point win.
RIT returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 6 when the Tigers begin competition in the 2018 Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at Nazareth College at 8 p.m. on the campus of Nazareth College.
