Women's hockey has unbeaten streak snapped in loss at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The RIT women's hockey team (3-7-4, 1-3-0 CHA) had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to Penn State University (6-7-2, 1-4-0 CHA), 3-0 from Pegula Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

Natalie Heising, Shea Nelson and Anna Promersberger scored for Penn State, while Jenna Brennenman picked up the shutout, stopping all 23 shots she faced.

Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) fired seven shots on goal for RIT, while Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) added four. Goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) was outstanding in net for the Tigers, stopping 48 of 50 shots. She made 17 saves in the first period, 15 in period two and 16 in the third period.

Penn State out-shot RIT, 51-23. The Tigers were 0-for-5 on the power-play, while Penn State was 0-for-4.

The Nittany Lions would score the lone goal in the opening period with 6:17 remaining, as Heising took a feed from Chrsti Vetter, flew into the RIT zone with a head of steam and on the rush, fired a shot past Lanteigne and off the left post and in for her team-best eighth goal of the season.

That was Lanteigne's lone blemish of the period, as she stopped 17 of 18 Penn State shots. The Nittany Lions held an 18-6 edge in shots on goal over the opening 20 minutes.

The Nittany Lions would add to its lead in the second period, as Nelson took a saucer feed from Brooke Madsen on a 2-on-1 rush with 6:14 remaining and wristed a shot that Lanteigne got a piece of, but not enough, as it hit the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) had two great chances in close later in the period denied by Brenneman.

The Tigers would have three power-plays within the first eight 8:36 of the third period and fired five shots, but could not get one past Brenneman. Promersberger put the game away with an empty-netter with 1:40 left.

Penn State leads the all-time series between the two schools, 16-13-3. The two teams will also meet for two games on Feb. 22-23, 2019 from the Gene Polisseni Center.

RIT and Penn State wrap up the two-game set from Pegula Ice Arena Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
