UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Despite a late third period rally, the RIT women's hockey team (3-8-4, 1-4-0 CHA) came up a goal short at College Hockey America rival Penn State University (7-7-2, 2-4-0 CHA), 2-1 from Pegula Ice Arena Wednesday evening.
Katie McMillan broke a scoreless tie with 35 seconds left in the second period, while Natalie Heising scored the eventual game-winning goal for Penn State with 12:32 remaining in regulation. Jenna Brenneman earned the win in goal, making 20 saves, including five over the final 3:59 of regulation.
Jordan Marchese (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) scored her first collegiate goal with 6:26 remaining in regulation for RIT to cut the Penn State lead to 2-1. The Tigers earned a power-play with 3:59 left and pulled goaltender
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) for the extra attacker with just over three minutes left, giving them a 6-on-4 advantage for 28 seconds. Lanteigne would re-enter the net after the power-play expired and was pulled again for the final 1:27.
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) and
Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) had chances in the final minute turned aside by Brenneman as Penn State hung on for the win.
Lanteigne made 38 saves on 40 shots, as Penn State held a 40-21 edge in shots on goal. She was especially sharp in the second period, stopping 17 of 18 Nittany Lions shots.
The Nittany Lions were 1-for-3 on the power-play, while RIT was 0-for-2.
"I thought it was a great effort from our team tonight," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach
Chad Davis. "We are going through the process of learning what it takes to win every night."
Marchese tallied her first goal with 6:26 left in regulation, deflecting a puck off a Penn State defender as she tried to come out from behind her own net. The puck trickled in over the goal line as Brenneman fell on the puck. The goal light went on but was not ruled a goal on the ice. The officials went in to review the play and deemed that the puck did cross the goal line.
Penn State, who defeated RIT, 3-0 yesterday, leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-13-3. The two teams will also meet for two games on Feb. 22-23, 2019 from the Gene Polisseni Center.
RIT is off this weekend and returns to action with a home series against CHA foe Lindenwood University on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. The game on Friday, Nov. 30 begins at 2 p.m., while the contest on Saturday, Dec. 1 gets underway at 12 p.m.
