Drackett records first collegiate shutout as men's hockey earns win over Canisius

Tigers have now won three straight contests and move to 6-3-1 in 2018-19

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore goaltender Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) made 25 saves for his first collegiate shutout to lead the RIT men's hockey team (6-3-1, 4-2-1 AHA) to a 2-0 win over Canisius College (4-5-0, 3-4-0 AHA) at the Gene Polisseni Center Tuesday night.

Drackett made eight saves in the first period, six saves in the second and preserved the shutout with 11 third period stops. He was forced to make a nifty save on a deflection in front by Alex Jaeckle with 2:35 remaining in regulation. Drackett, who has played in all 10 games this season, lowered his goals against average to 1.98 and raised his save percentage to .932 with the shutout.

Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) scored his first collegiate goal, while Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) scored the game-winner for the Tigers. The two goals came exactly three minutes apart in the second period.

RIT out-shot Canisius, 35-25. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power-play. Canisius goaltender Blake Weyrick was strong in defeat, turning aside 33 of 35 shots, including several key stops throughout.

With the win, RIT improves to 6-3-1 in 2018-19. It is the best 10-game start in RIT's Division I history. RIT has won three straight games and is now unbeaten in its last four contests.

"I was happy with our play tonight," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "I really liked our poise protecting the lead late in the third period. "We played calm throughout, which was an extension of our play last weekend."

Neither team scored in the opening period, despite RIT holding a 17-8 edge in shots as both goaltenders were called upon to make some key saves.

Weyrick came up with a series of big saves on an early RIT power-play, as the Tigers pounded the net with a six-shot barrage. Weyrick then robbed Jake Joffe (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) on the doorstep in front after an errant pass bounced off the side of the goal left the RIT forward all alone in front. Joffe tried to slide the puck around the Weyrick came up with a clutch pad save.

Drackett was called upon to make a tremendous save of his own, sliding across to rob Grant Meyer on a 2-on-1 rush.Dylan McLaughlin faked a shot on the odd-man rush and slid a perfect pass over to Meyer, but Drackett pushed over just in time to deny the scoring chance.

RIT would score two goals in a span of three minutes early in the second period to lift RIT to a 2-0 lead after two periods of play.

Just 1:22 into the period, with Drackett pulled for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty, Regan Seiferling (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) fired a pass across to his defensive partner Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings), who found Valenzuela coming off the bench. Valenzuela would cut to the net and lift a shot over the shoulder of Weyrick for his fourth goal of the season to open the scoring.

Just three minutes later, freshmen Walker and Calverley teamed up to give RIT a 2-0 lead. Walker stripped a Canisius player of the puck while trying to clear and fed Calverley in the slot. Calverley fired a hard wrist shot past Weyrick for his first collegiate goal to make it 2-0. The assist was also Walker's first collegiate point.

RIT was forced to kill off three Canisius power-plays in the period and succeeded. Jimmy Mazza had Canisius' best chance a little before the midway point of the period, firing a rocket of a slap shot off the crossbar and out.

Weyrick had to make his best save of the game right before the second period ended, stick his left pad out to rob Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) in close to keep it 2-0.

Weyrick came up with one more incredible save late in regulation, robbing Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) on the doorstep after a great feed from Valenzuela on a 2-on-1 rush.

Tonight's game was the first of two regular season meetings between the two schools this season. RIT and Canisius will also meet in the regular season finale from the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday, March 2. RIT leads the all-time series, 62-24-2, including a 23-15-1 edge since the Tigers moved to Division I in 2005.

RIT is off this weekend and returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 24 with a road contest at No. 13 Northeastern University that gets underway at 7 p.m.
