ST. CLOUD, MN – The RIT women's hockey team (1-1-1) suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 season, falling at St. Cloud State University (1-2-0) by a score of 7-3 from the Herb Brooks Center Friday night.
St. Cloud State took control early, scoring six times in the 13:54 of the contest to build a 6-1 lead. Hannah Potrykus scored two goals and two assists, while Hannah Theodosopoulos also tallied twice. Kayla Friesen had a goal and two assists, while Julia Tylke added three assists. Jordan Stewart and Taylor Wemple also scored. Goaltender Emma Polusny made 30 saves.
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored a goal and added an assist, while
Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) had two helpers to lead RIT offensively.
Jade Mancini (Burlington, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos) and
Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) also scored for the Tigers. Goaltender
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) earned the start and made 23 saves on 28 shots.
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) also played 5:31 in the opening period and made three saves.
Both teams fired 33 shots on goal, as RIT held an 11-5 edge in the final period. The Huskies were 2-for-3 on the power-play, while RIT was 1-for-4.
The Huskies would open the scoring just 3:04 in, as Stewart tipped in a point shot from Rachel Herzog past Lanteigne. Just under two minutes later, St. Cloud State would add to its lead, as Wemple scored from the high slot.
RIT would cut the St. Cloud State lead in half with 11:54 left in the opening period, as Rushton created a turnover in the neutral zone, sped in on a 2-on-1 and fired a shot that Polusny stopped, but Mancini buried a rebound in tight for her first goal of the season.
Moments later, Gout had a golden opportunity to tie the game, but was robbed on a backhand in front by Polusny.
The Huskies would take control, stunning RIT with four goals in a span of 4:09 to take a 6-1 lead. Theodosopoulos and Potrykus scored two goals apiece in the run.
Cornine would cut the Huskies lead to 6-2 with 3:32 left in the opening period, flying down the left wing, while the teams were playing 4-on-4 and unleashing a rocket of a wrist shot over the shoulder of Polusny to the short side for her second tally of the season.
Gout would cut the Huskies lead to 6-3 just before the midway point of the game on the power-play, firing in a shot from the slot with assists going to Cornine and Rushton. Friesen would make it 7-3 St. Cloud State, tapping in a loose puck from the side of the net after Lanteigne made a great lunging save on Potrykus.
RIT controlled play for much of the third period, out-shooting St. Cloud State 11-5, but Polusny made several big saves to keep it a four-goal game.
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs. RIT and St. Cloud State wrap up the weekend series on Saturday at 4:07 EST/3:07 CST.
