Women's soccer beats Ithaca 2-1 in critical Liberty League matchup

Tigers move closer to clinching a postseason berth

ROCHESTER, NY –The RIT (9-4-2, 4-2-2 Liberty League) women's soccer team defeated Ithaca College (12-2-2, 6-2-0 Liberty League) 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in a key Liberty League matchup from chilly Tiger Stadium. With the win, the Tigers move into fourth place in the Liberty League standings with 14 points. Courtney McHale (Newton, NJ/Newton) assisted on both RIT goals.

Shots were 19-4 in favor of Ithaca. The Tigers scored on both their shots on target, while the Bombers had 12 shots on net. Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) made a career-high 11 saves in net for RIT, earning the win. Emma Fruhling took the loss for Ithaca.

Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on her team-best sixth goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) sent a service into the box that Courtney McHale (Newton, NJ/Newton) got a head to. Roberts cleaned up the rebound to give the Tigers a lead.

Ithaca answered with a goal in the 44th minute, tying the game on a goal from Megan O'Reilly. She took advantage of a miscue by the RIT defense, intercepting a clearing pass and firing a shot from 20 yards out that beat Salls into the top-left corner.

The Tigers took the lead for good in the 59th minute. McHale fed Jenna Valleriano (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) who fired a shot from 18-yards out that Fruhling got a hand to, but couldn't control, going through her gloves and in for a 2-1 RIT lead.

Ithaca had a couple chances late. Alex Epifani had a chance from 20 yards out with a little over 12 minutes remaining, but Salls tipped the shot over the crossbar and out of play. Elise Leavitt had a chance with under eight minutes to play, but her shot was just wide of the post.

RIT can finish as high as third or as low as seventh in the Liberty League standings. The top-six teams advance to the Liberty League Postseason Tournament, which takes place next week.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 27 when the Tigers host Union College at 2 p.m. on the field Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will honor the Class of 2019 prior to kick-off.
