ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) recorded his third career hat-trick, junior
Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) added a pair of goals and sophomore goaltender
Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) made 41 saves, as the RIT men's hockey team (2-1-0) rolled to a 6-1 win over Colgate University (2-1-0) in front of a sellout crowd of 10,556 fans at Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester Saturday night as part of Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend.
Brown scored a goal in all three periods to give him 55 for his career, tying Simon Lambert and Tyler Brenner for RIT's Division I team record. Brown is coming off a 2017-18 season in which he scored 29 goals in 37 games. He now has 32 goals over his last 40 games.
Cameron recorded his first multiple-goal game, scoring RIT's third and fourth goals.
Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) scored a goal and added an assist, while
Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) had a career-high four assists.
Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) and
Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) recorded two assists apiece.
Drackett was tremendous in goal for the Tigers, tying his career-high with 41 saves, which was also set at Blue Cross Arena as part of Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend last season versus Northeastern University. Drackett was especially sharp in the second period, stopping 19 of 20 Colgate shots, as RIT killed off two long Colgate 5-on-3 power-plays.
The RIT penalty-killing unit was sensational, killing off all eight Colgate power-plays on the evening. The Tigers had to kill off a full two minutes of a Colgate 5-on-3 midway through the second period and 57 seconds of another two man-advantage later in the period. The duo of
Darren Brady (Lake Orion, MI/New Jersey Titans) and
Alden Dupuis (Edmonton, Alberta/Bonnyville Pontiacs) combined to block nine shots while shorthanded, as RIT blocked 23 shots overall as a team.
Colgate out-shot RIT, 42-26. RIT was 2-for-5 on the power-play. RIT led 3-0 after one period and built a 5-0 second period before the Raiders got on the board.
"I thought we played a really good first period," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "I was disappointed with the numbers of penalties we took, especially in the second period, but to win 6-1 at home during homecoming is a great accomplishment and puts us in a good frame of mind going forward."
Tyler Jeanson scored Colgate's lone goal late in the second period. Mitch Benson took the loss in the net, stopping 14 of 19 RIT shots over the first 40 minutes of play. Andrew Farrier made six saves in relief during the third period.
The Tigers opened up a 3-0 lead after period of play, scoring twice in a span of 25 seconds late in the frame to send the sellout crowd into a frenzy.
Brown would open the scoring just 4:29 in, taking a nifty feed from
Dan Willett (Bayville, NY/Bloomington Thunder) in the slot and firing a wrist shot over the glove of Benson for his first goal of the season. Girduckis started the play in the neutral zone and fed Willett at the Colgate line. Willett found Brown in the middle of the zone and the senior captain did the rest for his 53rd career goal.
Valenzuela and Cameron would tally 25 seconds apart late in the opening period to give RIT a commanding 3-0 lead after one period. Valenzuela fired a shot from the slot on a power-play that ricocheted off a pair of Colgate defenders and past Citron for his second tally of the season. Right off the ensuing whistle, Cameron would redirect a shot from Hamacher past Citron for his first of the night.
RIT would add two more goals in the second period to take a commanding 5-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Cameron would net his second goal of the night 9:05 into the second period, roofing a shot over Citron off a feed from Hamacher to make it 4-0. Dupuis caused a turnover at the Colgate line, chipping a pass to Hamacher, which created a 2-on-1 down low.
Brown made it 5-0 RIT a little less than five minutes later, scoring on a wraparound after great work down low by Girduckis and Valenzuela set the play up.
Drackett would make several key saves in the period before Colgate got on the board two seconds after a RIT penalty expired. Ben Sharf fired a shot that Drackett stopped, but Jeanson was right on the doorstep to clean up the rebound with 1:41 left in the period for his first goal of the year.
Brown would complete the hat-trick with 1:13 left in regulation on the power-play, as he was left all alone on the doorstep to jam home a pass from Girduckis.
The win was RIT's third at Blue Cross Arena during Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend and first since 2011. RIT has a four-game unbeaten streak downtown during homecoming weekend and has an overall eight-game unbeaten streak at Blue Cross Arena (5-0-3) dating back to the 2015 Atlantic Hockey Championships. The Tigers are 11-9-4 all-time at Blue Cross Arena.
RIT's senior class has never lost at Blue Cross Arena, compiling a 3-0-3 mark.
RIT is back in action next weekend, opening up Atlantic Hockey play with a pair of road contests at Robert Morris University. Both Friday and Saturday's contests from 84 Lumber Arena begin at 7:05 p.m.
