ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT volleyball team (15-2) matched its longest winning streak in a quarter-century, defeating Medaille College (4-13), 25-16, 25-14, 25-15 from Clark Gymnasium Tuesday evening. RIT has now won 13 consecutive matches.
Overall, RIT hit .324 and recorded 47 points to just 26 for Medaille. RIT also held a 28-17 edge in digs.
RIT hit .480 in the opening set with 14 kills on 25 hitting attempts en route to the 25-16 win. The Tigers took advantage of 10 Medaille attack errors in set two to prevail 25-14 and put the match away
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led a balanced RIT attack with 10 kills three service aces and two blocks, while
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) hit .400 with six digs, five kills and three service aces.
Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY/South Glens Falls) hit .375 with four kills and two blocks, while fellow middle hitter
Kelly Fellner (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had three kills in six attempts.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) had 23 digs, while
Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the way with 10 digs, including seven in the opening set.
Eleanor Clarke led Medaille with five kills to go along with seven assists. Savannah Berry recorded a team-high nine assists, while Gina Appenheimer had eight digs.
"We were able to get a lot of players in and we played well," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "Medaille is a very tough serving team and I thought we handled that very well. I am excited to get back into Liberty League play this weekend."
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 5-3. The Tigers have now defeated Medaille in each of the last two years.
RIT last won 13 matches in a row from Oct. 29 to Nov. 19, 1993. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Division III Semifinals that season. RIT also had winning streaks of 15 and 23 matches, respectively during the 1992 season.
The Tigers put their winning streak on the line this weekend with a pair of key road Liberty League matchups. On Friday, RIT heads to Union College to play the Dutchwomen at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, faces Skidmore college at 2 p.m.
