Volleyball stays unbeaten in Liberty League play with three-set win over Union

Tigers extend winning streak to 14 matches

SCHENECTADY, NY – The RIT volleyball team (16-2, 3-0 Liberty League) stayed unbeaten in Liberty League play and extended its winning streak to 14 matches, defeating Union College (10-7, 2-2 Liberty League), 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 from the Viniar Athletic Center Friday evening.
 
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) was a force offensively for the Tigers, hitting .444 with 20 kills, eight digs, two service aces and two blocks. Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) hit .360 with 12 kills and eight digs, while Kelly Fellner (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had a career-best six assisted blocks to go along with five kills. Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) handed out 41 assists, while Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had a match-high 14 digs. Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) added four assisted blocks.
 
RIT used a 6-0 run midway through the opening set to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 15-10 lead and never look back, winning by a score of 25-18. Hobler hit .636 with eight kills, while Parkinson had 13 assists in the set. The Tigers hit .417 as a team.
 
In set two, Union scored the first three points before RIT rattled off a 13-3 run to take a 13-6 lead. Union would threaten late, but the Tigers would hang on for the 25-21 win. The Tigers trailed throughout most of set three before rallying late to win 25-21.
 
Overall, RIT had 59 points to 41 from Union and hit .330 in the match. The Tigers held a 44-35 advantage in digs and had seven blocks.
 
"I was really pleased with our overall performance tonight," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "This is a good road win against a very strong opponent in Union. We like that our team has accepted the challenge to making the in-match adjustments necessary to compete in the Liberty League."
 
Lara Atalay led the Dutchwomen by hitting .385 with 13 kills to go along with 10 digs, while Maegan Teets had 15 assists. Kaylee Velasquez recorded a team-high 12 digs.
 
RIT is right back in action on at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at league foe Skidmore College.
