ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT volleyball team (20-3) reached the 20-win plateau after earning a pair of wins Saturday at the
30th annual RIT Volleyball Invitational, held at Clark Gym Saturday. RIT knocked off Alfred University (2-19) in four sets in today's opener and defeated Buffalo State College (3-21) in three sets. Freshman
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, while senior
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Versus Alfred, RIT won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-21 before Alfred took the third set 27-25. The Tigers would pull away in the fourth set, 25-15 to secure the win.
Hobler, who recorded a career-high 32 kills in yesterday's win over Nazareth, led the team with Tigers with 25 more kills, while recording 10 digs and a match high four aces.
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) also recorded a double-double, compiling 16 kills and 11 digs.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) had a match-high 46 assists, while
Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) had a match-high 18 digs.
Amber Smith led the Saxons with 12 kills and nine digs. Amanda Burns dished out a team-high 29 assists, while Rachael
Moravansky had two aces.
The Tigers recorded a comeback win in the first set, 25-23 and also rallied to win set two, 25-21. Alfred fought hard to rally and take the third set, 27-25 before the Tigers won the fourth and final set, 25-15. RIT never trailed in the set and had 17 kills to just three for Alfred to put the match away.
In the match, RIT out-scored Alfred, 77-46 including 66 Tigers kills to 35 for the Saxons. RIT had an advantage in hitting, they hit .250 on the match compared to Alfred's .211.
The second match of the day featured RIT defeating Buffalo State in straight sets. The Tigers started out strong winning the first set, 25-8. In set two it was a back-and-forth affair but RIT came out on top, 25-19. The Tigers finished the third set by winning 25-13. In the final set,
Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) served for 11 straight points, including five service aces to seal the win.
Hobler had a match high 13 kills followed by
Kelly Fellner (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) (11) and
Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) (seven). Daly led the team with 15 digs while totaling seven aces in the match, while
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) added 13 digs.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) led the team with 27 assists.
The Tigers out-scored the Bengals 56-16, including 38 kills for RIT compared to Buffalo State's 10.
"This was a good weekend for our team," said head coach
Jim Lodes. "Everyone contributed as we improved throughout our matches. It's a luxury to have a deep and available roster as we work through getting everyone healthy."
The Tigers will be back on the court Tuesday evening with a road contest at
Fredonia State University that gets underway at 6 p.m.
