FREDONIA, NY – The RIT volleyball team (21-3) rallied to earn a hard-fought five-set win over host Fredonia State University (16-7) at Dods Hall Tuesday evening. RIT has won four straight matches and 19 of its last 20 contests overall.
RIT took set one, 25-21 before the Blue Devils rolled in set two, 25-15. Fredonia outlasted RIT in the third set, 28-26 before the Tigers took set four, 15-9. RIT never trailed in the fifth and final set, winning 15-9 to take the match.
The Tigers trailed 11-7 in the opening set before using a key run to take the lead and hang on. Fredonia out-scored RIT, 19-7 to end the second set. Tied at 26-26 all in a back-and-forth third set, Fredonia slammed back-to-back kills to earn the 28-26 win. RIT used a crucial 6-0 run late in the fourth to rally from 20-17 down and force a fifth set. The Tigers jumped out immediately in the fifth set, scoring six of the first seven points to earn the win.
RIT had 49 kills to 47 for Fredonia, while the Blue Devils out-scored the Tigers overall, 70-64. Both teams hit .150 in the match, while the Tigers had 81 digs to 70 for Fredonia.
"The team found a way to persevere a tough opponent on the road," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "I'm proud of our ability to put previous plays behind us and get in the moment of the current play. This was a good character win."
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Tigers with 19 kills to go along with 12 digs.
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) had a double-double with 18 digs and 10 kills, while middle hitter
Kelly Fellner (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) hit a team-best .389 with eight kills to go along with five blocks.
Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY/South Glens Falls) added six kills and three blocks.
Senior setter
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) had 44 assists, 11 digs and three blocks, while
Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) added 18 digs and two assists.
Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) also added 15 digs.
Sallyanne Rudny led Fredonia with a match-high 23 kills to go along with 16 digs. Kailey Falk added 13 kills, 12 digs and three assisted blocks. Amanda Mosack had 40 assists and four service aces, while Rachel Aiello recorded a match-high 24 digs.
RIT returns to action with a pair of Liberty League home matches to celebrate Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend. The Tigers host Vassar College on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and welcome Bard College to Rochester Saturday at 2 p.m. RIT will honor seniors
