Men's soccer gets back in win column with Liberty League victory over Rensselaer

ROCHESTER, NY –The RIT (5-5-1, 1-4-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (4-8-1, 2-3-0 Liberty League) Friday afternoon. Senior captain Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY/Hilton) scored the game winner in the 72nd minute.

Shots were 11-5 in favor of RIT. The Tigers fired four shots on target, while the Engineers mustered just one shot on goal. RIT took six corner kicks to four for Rensselaer. Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) got the win in net for the Tigers, making one save. Luke Brezak took the loss for RPI, making four saves.

RIT struck early, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal in the second minute. Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) took a ball from Adam Bem (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and dribbled through three Rensselaer defenders, eventually working his way into the RPI box and a 1-on-1 with Brezak. He made a move to get free and fired a shot into the corner to give the Tigers an early lead.

"Big win or the team today against a very good RPI side," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "We liked out work-rate and discipline. Our defense did a very good job staying with it the entire game today, and we were able to put a couple in on the other end and get a much needed positive result."

RPI had a chance in the 21st minute on a shot from Austin Betterly from 18 yards out that Sokol snagged. Moments later, Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) sent a dangerous ball into the Rensselaer box that was turned aside by an Engineers defender.

Rensselaer tied the game early in the second half. RIT was whistled for a foul inside its own penalty box, giving the Engineers a penalty kick. Dillon Ashong buried his shot into the low-right corner, tying the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.

DeFeo and Garno worked the give-and-go to perfection just over 20 minutes later. Garno fed DeFeo with a nice pass and he buried a shot for his first goal of the season that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. RIT's defense held strong the remaining 18 minutes for the win.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when the Tigers host Skidmore College at 2 p.m. on the field at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will honor the Class of 2019 prior to Saturday's contest.
