ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (5-6, 3-1 Liberty League) men's basketball team won 78-73 in overtime versus Rensselaer (7-4, 2-1 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Clark Gym Saturday afternoon. The win snaps a four-game losing skid by the Tigers, who are now in a three-way tie for second in the Liberty League standings.
RIT shot 39.7 percent from the floor on 25-of-63 shooting. The Tigers went 6-of-22 from behind the arc, and made 22-of-24 from the foul line.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) led the Tigers with 26 points and five assists.
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) tallied 11 points, while
Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) and
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) each scored eight points. Aguilera also finished with game-high totals of 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Andreas Kontopidis led Rensselaer with 23 points and five rebounds. Tom Horvat added 21 points, while Kevin Davis chipped in eight points and eight rebounds for the Engineers, who shot 37.3 percent for the game.
RIT led by as many as 15 points in the first half.
Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 12 minutes to play in the opening half that gave the Tigers a 20-5 lead. Marcus Giese cut the RIT lead to 32-26 late in the half with his 3-point play.
Charles Okehie (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) laid the ball in with eight seconds to play in the half to give the Tigers a 34-26 lead at the break.
The Tigers shot 40.6 percent in the opening half on 13-of-22 shooting. Atkinson led the Tigers with nine first-half points on 3-of-8 shooting. Smith tallied eight points, while Kontopidis led RPI with seven points.
RIT opened the second half on a 13-7 run, taking a 43-33 lead on a layup by Okehie. A pair of pair of Pierre-Louis free throws made it 45-35 Tigers with 14:34 to play. With 5:39 to play, Kontopidis tied the score at 60-60 on his layup off a steal from Horvat. He gave the Engineers its first lead of the half on the next possession with his bucket with 4:24 to play. Kontopidis gave RPI a 66-64 lead with his jumper with 1:23 to play. Lewis converted a pair of free throws with 1:01 to play to tie the score at 66-66.
The Tigers outscored Rensselaer 12-7 in the overtime to win 78-73. Pierre-Louis scored six of the Tigers 12 points in the overtime, including two free throws late to help seal the win.
