Women's hockey suffers tough overtime loss to CHA rival Robert Morris

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (4-19-3, 1-11-0 CHA) suffered a tough 4-3 loss in overtime to visiting Robert Morris University (14-6-3, 8-2-2 CHA) in a College Hockey America matchup at the Gene Polisseni Center Saturday afternoon.

Jaycee Gebhard scored her second goal of the game with 1:52 left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3 and Maggie Lague won the game 2:03 into overtime for Robert Morris. Emily Curlett also scored for the Colonials, while Brittany Howard had two assists. In net, Elijah Milne-Price made 32 saves.

Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored a goal and added an assist for the Tigers, while Brittany Gout and Baylee Trani (Huntington Beach, CA/New England Hockey Club) also scored. Goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped 38 shots.

Robert Morris out-shot RIT, 42-35. The Colonials were 2-for-9 on the power-play, generating 17 shots, while RIT was 0-for-4. RIT blocked 28 shots in the game.

"I thought this was our most complete game from start to finish this season," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. "We showed a lot of grit today and showed we can compete with any team."

The Tigers came out with great intensity, scoring the first two goals en route to a 2-1 lead during an exciting first period of play in which the two teams combined for 32 shots on goal.

Just 3:59 into the contest, Gout ripped a one-timer off a feed from Cornine from the right circle into the top corner of the net past Milne-Price to open the scoring for RIT. The goal was her fourth of the season.

Lanteigne would be called upon to make an incredible save on Rennie moments later, sliding across the crease to stick the pad out and deny what looked to be a sure goal.

Trani would extend the RIT lead to 2-0 with seven minutes left in the period, jamming a pass from Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) past Milne-Price from in close for her second goal of the season. Ellie Larson (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson High School) also assisted on the goal, Trani's second of the season.

The Colonials would get on the board with 3:18 left in the period, as Gebhard slammed in a rebound after Howard's original shot was stopped in close by Lanteigne.

Both teams scored once in the second period, in which RIT held a 13-10 shot advantage to lead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

RIT wasted no time regaining its two-goal lead, as Cornine slid in a pass from Jade Mancini (Burlington, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos) on a 2-on-2 rush past Milne-Price for her team-leading ninth goal of the year just 30 seconds into the period to make it 3-1. Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) started the rush with a long stretch pass to Mancini, who then found Cornine streaking past her defender to the goal.

Lanteigne kept it 3-1 with an incredible pad save on Gebhard as her and Howard worked a give-and-go in close to near perfection. Gebhard looked to have the entire left side of the net open before Lanteigne kept her pad on the ice for the great save.

The Colonials would inch closer at the 6:09 mark of the period, as a long shot by Curlett deflected off a Tiger defender, changing direction and eluding Lanteigne for her seventh goal of the season.

RIT did an excellent job later in the period, limiting the Colonials to just two shots on goal on three power-play attempts. Overall, RIT blocked 13 shots in the period.
Lanteigne made two great saves early in the third period to keep it 3-2, first robbing Rennie in close and then Natalie Marcuzzi on the doorstep.

The Colonials would tie the game at 3-3 on a power-play with 1:52 left in regulation, as Gebhard swatted in a rebound at the doorstep after Lanteigne made the initial save on Howard.

In overtime, RIT had a golden chance, as Stella Haberman (Golden Valley, MN/Minnesota Whitecaps) fired a slap shot from the right circle that Milne-Price got a piece of, but the puck laid in the crease. Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) made a diving swipe at the puck but just missed sending it into the open net.

The Colonials would come back down the ice moments later, as Lague came over the RIT blueline and fired an innocent looking shot from the right-wing boards that took a funny hop and bounced over the glove of Lanteigne to win it for the Colonials.

Today was the fourth and final regular season contest between the two schools in 2017-18. Robert Morris leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-10-3.

RIT is back in action next weekend, Jan. 26-27 at College Hockey America foe Lindenwood University. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. EST, while Saturday's contest starts at 3 p.m. EST.
