WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The RIT wrestling team (6-6) won both matches Saturday to finish ninth overall at the 2018 Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming College. The Tigers knocked off Williams College, 31-9 and Wesleyan University to finish 3-2 on the weekend.
Yesterday, the Tigers fell to Springfield and No. 11 Messiah, while defeating Mo. 24 Milikin in pool play.
Alex Prunoske (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater Catholic),
Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area),
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) and
Trevor Snow (Dexter, NY/General Brown) picked up a pair of wins apiece to lead the Tigers. All four wrestlers went 4-1 on the weekend
In the opener against Williams, RIT trailed 6-4 before winning six of the final seven matches.
Zarek Thomas (Waterford, NY/Albany Academy) defeated Jack Murphy, 5-3 at 149 lbs. to give RIT the lead for good. Winters recorded a win by fall in 2:38 at 157 lbs., while Hall earned a 7-4 win at 165 lbs. to give the Tigers a 16-6 lead. After Williams cut the lead to 16-9, the Tigers put the match away. Matt Cicco (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) was awarded a victory by forfeit.
Connor Calkins (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) earned a technical fall (16-0) at 285 lbs. to close out the match.
Against Wesleyan, the Tigers trailed 11-3 after four matches before going on another big run, with three straight pins and a come-from-behind victory to go up 24-11. Winters started the run with a pin in just 50 seconds over Edward Pierce. Hall pinned Aaron Cranston in 2:57 to give RIT the lead for good.
Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) earned RIT's third straight pin, taking down Dominic Pirraglia at 174 lbs. in 2:17. Snow clinched the match by rallying from a 4-2 deficit to earn a 5-4 decision.
RIT is back in action at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships hosted by Cortland State.
