WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The RIT wrestling team (4-6) went 1-2 on day one of the 2018 Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College on Friday. The Tigers will compete for ninth place on Saturday and wrestle Williams College at 9 a.m. and either Wesleyan University or Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 12 p.m.
RIT opened the day by falling to Springfield College, 21-16 before defeating No. 24 Milikin University via forfeit. The Tigers dropped their final match of the day to No. 11 Messiah College, 37-9.
Springfield jumped out to a quick 9-0 advantage in the opener, before RIT won five of the next six matches, taking a 16-15 lead. Joe Fusco earned a pin at 285 lbs. to won the match for Springfield.
Zarek Thomas (Waterford, NY/Albany Academy) recorded a 7-0 win over Mike Vietri at 149 lbs. to get RIT on the board.
Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) won by major decision, 12-0 at 157 lbs., while
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) gave RIT its first lead of the match, 10-9, with an 11-9 victory over Aarin Feliz at 165 lbs. After Springfield took the lead back,
Trevor Snow (Dexter, NY/General Brown) defeated George Tarwo, 5-2 at 184 lbs. and
Matt Cicco (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) knocked off Ryan Gray, 7-1 at 197 lbs.
Against Messiah, the 11th ranked Falcons won eight of the 10 matches, one by fall, four by technical fall and two major decisions. Messiah had three wrestlers in the match ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight classes.
Alex Prunoske (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater Catholic) earned a 3-2 win for RIT at 133 lbs. over Ka'au Estrella, while junior transfer
Connor Calkins (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) won his first match as a Tiger, pinning Jared Schell in 2:29 at 285 lbs.
The Tigers are back in action next Saturday, Jan. 20, competing at the Empire Wrestling Championships hosted by Cortland State University.
