SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — A handful of RIT women's tennis student-athletes competed at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Women's Tennis Northeast Regional Championship from Sept. 22-24 at Skidmore College.
Players representing 16 schools from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are competing for the individual singles and double championship at Skidmore's Wenger Courts and the Wilton YMCA Indoor Courts. The tournament winners will advance to the ITA Oracle Cup Championships Oct. 11-15 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) was the lone singles winner for the Tigers, as she defeated Ndanu Mutisya over Hamilton, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the first round. She was defeated by Sneha Rangu of The College of New Jersey in the second round, 6-1 and 6-1.
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) also represented the Tigers in singles play.
In doubles action, the duo of
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) and
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) lost their first round match, before winning a consolation match over Tess Lubin and Mailani Neal of Rensselaer, 8-5.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 with a home match against Liberty League foe William Smith College that gets underway at 4 p.m.
