Box Score CORTLAND, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (2-0) won its second consecutive match to start the 2017-18 season in wild fashion, 5-4 over host SUNY Cortland (5-2) on Wednesday afternoon.
Cortland won two of the three doubles matches before RIT won three of the first four singles matches to go up 4-3. At sixth singles, RIT's
Diana Kulawiec (Fairport, NY/Fairport) trailed Tina Wertman, 4-2 in the third set, but rallied to tie at 5-5, fighting off two match points. Wertman, however, won the next two games to win the match. 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 and tie the overall score at 4-4.
Moments later, Nikaylah Williams of Cortland went up 5-1 over
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) at second singles and was a game away from winning the match. Ginster would fight back to win the final six games. Williams fought off two match points down 6-5, but Ginster scored the next two points, including a smash to end it just as the sun was going down. Ginster won the match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) moved to 8-1 this season with a dominant, 6-0, 6-0 win over Olivia Terry at fifth singles, while
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles over Mia Hayes and
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) won at third singles over Kelliann Camp, 6-1, 6-2.
Casalnova and Zablonski earned RIT's lone doubles point, 8-3 at the second position over Camp and Cassie Special.
The Tigers return to action this weekend at the ITA Tournament, hosted by Skidmore College.
