RIT men's lacrosse to host SUNY Cortland Wednesday in NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals

ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 2 RIT men's lacrosse team continues post-season play on Wednesday, May 17 in the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Tigers, host No. 8 SUNY Cortland in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. from Tiger Stadium. The winner advances to play the winner between Bates and Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Tournament Semifinals on Sunday, May 21.

Tickets for Wednesday's game are $5 for adults and $3 for students/youth and can be purchased at the main entrance to Tiger Stadium.
 
The Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals after a 17-8 win over Stevenson University in Saturday's third round contest. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led RIT with seven points on three goals and four assists. Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) tallied five goals, while Kyle Killen (Peterborough, ON/Crestwood Secondary ) finished with five points on three goals and an assist. Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) got the win in net, making 14 saves. Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) won 10-of-19 draws, while Lee led the Tigers with seven ground balls.
 
RIT enters this afternoon fifth in Division III in scoring, averaging 17.40 goals per game. The Tigers are out-scoring their opponents 348-188 and are 25-of-68 (36.8 percent) with the man-advantage. RIT has scored 20 or more goals six times, including five of its last seven contests. The Tigers have won 13 straight games, scoring 262 goals over that stretch.
 
The Tigers feature 15 players with 10 or more points, 12 with 10 or more goals and four players with 40 or more points. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy), who was named the 2017 Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team and is 20th in Division III in scoring with 98 points on 56 goals and 42 assists. Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) is second in scoring with 83 points on 57 goals and 26 assists, while Kyle Killen (Peterborough, ON/Crestwood Secondary ) is third in scoring with 48 points. Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) is fourth with 45 points.
 
Defensively, RIT allows 9.40 goals per contest, holding its opponents to fewer than 10 goals 13 times. The Tigers are 335-of-596 (56.8 percent) from the face-off "X" and are averaging 42.3 ground balls and 11.75 caused turnovers per contest.
 
Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) has taken the majority of RIT's face-offs, winning 171-of-313 (54.6 percent) this season. Lee leads the team with 62 ground balls. J.D. Hall leads the team with 28 caused turnovers, while Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) is second with 27. Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) is 16-2 in net this season with a 9.74 goals against average and a .568 save percentage. He is 5-0 with a 9.12 goals against average and a .614 save percentage in his last five contests, and 11-0 with a 9.53 goals against average and a .592 save percentage in his last 12 starts.
 
SUNY Cortland has won two straight games, and 9-of-10 including a convincing 20-10 victory at No. 5 St. Lawrence in the third round on Saturday. Thomas McNaney and Devin Phelps led Cortland with nine points apiece. McNaney had five goals and four assists, while Phelps finished with six goals and three assists. Tyler Brown tallied three goals, while Mike Hart won 17-of-27 face-offs. Joe Scalise got the win in net, making 15 saves.
 
The Red Dragons enter today averaging 14.00 goals per game, out-scoring their opponents 266-168 on the season. Cortland is 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) on its man-up chances and have scored 10 or more goals 16 times.
 
Devin Phelps is one 10 players with 10 or more points, and one of two Red Dragons with 80 or more points. He leads the team with 86 points on 45 goals and 41 assists. McNaney is second with 80 points on 49 goals and 31 assists. Nate Beresovoy is third with 43 points, and Joey Panariello is fourth with 41 points. 
 
Defensively, the Red Dragons allow 8.84 goals per contest, winning 257-of-486 (52.9 percent) of its face-offs. The Red Dragons average 36.0 ground balls, while causing 9.26 turnovers per game.
 
Hart has taken the majority of the draws, winning 207-of-364 (56.9 percent) this season. He leads the team with 123 ground balls, while Dave Foster has 28 caused turnovers. Scalise is 17-2 with an 8.47 goals against average and a .542 save percentage.

These two teams met earlier in the season, with RIT beating the Red Dragons 15-9. The Tigers scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to break open a close game. Lee and Levick led the Tigers with four points apiece. Jimmy Nielsen and Danny Caroussos led the Red Dragons with three points apiece. Cortland holds a slight 20-19 lead in the all-time series, but RIT has won six straight games, including two in the postseason.
