Softball drops pair of games at No. 5 St. John Fisher

The Tigers fell 7-1 in both games, in their first matchup of the season against a nationally-ranked team

PITTSFORD, NY — The RIT softball team (12-5) dropped a pair of contests at No. 5 St. John Fisher College (17-3) Monday afternoon at the St. John Fisher College Softball Complex. The Tigers fell in both games by the identical score of 7-1.

In game one, Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) got the start on the mound for RIT. She pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits. Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) came in for the final inning of the game, allowing just one hit and retiring three of four batters faced. Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) led the Tigers bats with two hits and a run scored, while Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) had two hits, including a double. Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) had the other hit in the game for RIT.

Lindsey Thayer picked up her 10th win of the season for the Cardinals, going six innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while adding seven strikeouts. Danielle Ventrone led both teams offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Emma Savas had a game high two RBIs, while three other Cardinals batted in runs. Sam Schermerhorn and Marissa Kirker added a pair of hits apiece.

St. John Fisher broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third. Each team then added a run apiece in the fourth, making it 3-1 heading to the fifth. But the sixth is where the Cardinals' bats heated up. They scored four times in the frame on four hits.

In game two, there was more of the same on both sides. RIT was out-hit 12-6 in the contest.

Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) started the game, pitching for 4 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits, with one strikeout. Adler came in again in relief, throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing two hits. At the plate, Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) hit a solo home run for the Tigers, while Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) had two hits. Lunderman, Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), and Laura Weintraub (Syosset, NY/Syosset) each added a hit.

For the Cardinals, Monica Moses pitched a complete game of six innings, surrendering just one run on six hits, while adding three strikeouts. Karlie Neale led St. John Fisher offensively, going 3-for-3 with a game-high three RBIs. Julia Sortisio and Kirker added two RBIs, while seven different Cardinals scored a run.

St. John Fisher got a quick start in the contest, scoring two runs on a single by Neale in the bottom of the first. Farner would then cut the 2-0 deficit in half for the Tigers on a solo home run over the center field fence. Five runs by the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth would prove to be the dagger.

RIT is back in action on Wednesday, as the Tigers will host The College at Brockport (7-7) for a doubleheader. The two-game set will begin at 3 p.m. from Tiger Stadium.
