Softball earns doubleheader split against The College at Brockport

Golden Eagles win game one, 5-2, Tigers take game two by same score

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (13-6) earned a doubleheader against The College at Brockport (8-8) at sunny and cool Tiger Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Brockport won game one, 5-2, while RIT returned the favor in game two, winning by the same score.

RIT freshman shortstop Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a run scored in the doubleheader, raising her season average to .433 as she now has 29 hits in 19 games.

In game one, Brockport snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Allison Missavage lined a double off the glove of a diving Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly), who almost made a highlight reel catch, driving in both runs to make it 4-2. Brockport would add a run on an error.

Michaela Contreras earned her third win of the season on the mound for the Golden Eagles, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out one batter and walking one. She needed just 64 pitches to hurl the complete game. Meghan Cullen, Casey Danko, and Eaton had two hits apiece.

The Tigers took the early 1-0 lead in the third inning, as Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey) led off with a triple and scored on a double by Guinan. Brockport would respond in the fourth inning, as Karleigh Eaton hit a towering home run to left field with a runner on base, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead. RIT would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) led off with a single, moved to second, and eventually scored on a two-out double by Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West).

Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) took the loss for the Tigers in game one, allowing nine hits and four earned runs, while striking out five batters.

In game two, RIT would break a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Blaker drilled a shot to the gap in left center field, that was almost run down by Alexis Ross, but glanced off the tip of her glove as she attempted to make an incredible catch for a two-run double. The next batter, Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), ripped a single to right field that scored Blaker to make it 3-0.

RIT would add to its lead in the fourth inning, as Guinan singled in Thayer, who singled earlier in the inning. Farner, who reached base on a perfectly executed bunt, advanced to third on Guinan's single and would score on a double steal to make it a 5-0 game.

Brockport would get on the board in the sixth inning as Lindsay Wachna crushed a towering two-run home run to left field to cut the RIT lead to 5-2.

RIT starter Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) improved to 5-2 on the season, throwing a seven-hit complete-game, striking out seven batters. Guinan and Thayer had two hits apiece.

Becky Knorr took the loss for the Golden Eagles, allowing nine hits and five runs in six innings. Wachna was 3-for-3, while Morgan Flamholtz had two hits.

Today marked RIT's first win over the Golden Eagles since May 3, 2005.

The Tigers open up Liberty League play this weekend, heading to Skidmore College for a pair of games on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Clarkson University at 1 p.m. Sunday for a doubleheader.
