SCHENECTADY, NY -- The RIT (8-7, 3-5 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was defeated 13-10 at Union College (5-8, 4-4 Liberty League) in a key Liberty League matchup on Friday afternoon. The Tigers fall into eighth place in the Liberty League standings, while Union remains locked in a four-way tie for the fourth and final Liberty League playoff spot.
Shots were 26-25 in favor of Union. RIT grabbed 13 ground balls to 14 for the Dutchwomen. The Tigers won 13-of-25 draw controls, went 13-of-16 on clearing attempts, and were 6-of-11 on free position attempts.
Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) led RIT with three goals.
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and
Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) each scored two goals, while
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) finished with a goal and an assist.
Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) took the loss in net, making seven saves. Ward won six dra controls.
Jackie Hagopian and Hannah Rosenberger led Union with three goals apiece. Kellie Cronin dished out three assists, while Ramsey Walsh scored two goals. Jen Hughes got the win in net for the Dutchwomen, making seven saves.
Union jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Hagopian and Rosenberger inside the first five minutes of action. RIT responded with two straight goals. Livecchi converted a free position attempt to make it 2-1, and
Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) scored at the 16:32 mark of the half to tie the score at 2-2.
The Dutchwomen scored three straight, taking a 5-2 lead on Julia Pfohl's goal at the 13:23 mark of the half. RIT kept coming back. This time, Ward scored two straight for RIT, cutting the Union lead to 5-4 on her second goal of the half.
After a Walsh goal made it 6-4 Union, Bingo converted a free position attempt to cut the lead to 6-5. Pfohl scored again with 5:08 to play to give the Dutchwomen a 7-5 lead. Livecchi scored off an assist from Bingo with 40 seconds to play to make it 7-6 Union at the break.
Union came out in the second half in a similar fashion to the first. The Dutchwomen scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 10-6 lead on Cailin Pandolfi's goal with 18:10 left.
Cassie Swan (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) broke the run with her free position goal at teh 17:06 mark, and DaCosta tacked on a second straight goal to make it 10-8 Union with 16:05 to play.
Hagopian made it 11-8 Union with her goal with 15:35 to play. DaCosta came back with her second goal of the half, cutting the Dutchwomen lead to 11-9. Rosenberger made it 12-9 with her goal with 13:05 to play. DaCosta scored the hat trick with her third goal of the half coming with 8:30 to play, cutting the RIT deficit to 12-10.
Ward had a chance to make it a one-goal game, but Hughes saved her shot with just under four minutes to play. Union was able to clear the ball and Mallory Toolan put the game away with her goal with 2:59 to play in regulation.
With the loss, RIT is eliminated from Liberty League postseason contention.
RIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 29 when the Tigers face No. 8 William Smith College at 2 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
