POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The women's track and field team finished second out of six teams at the 2017 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Weinberg Field on the campus of Vassar College Saturday. Senior
Jess Calzolari (Longmont, CO/Mead) was named the Liberty League Field Athlete of the Meet.
Calzolari, who was also the Field Athlete of the Meet at the 2017 Liberty League Indoor Track and Field Championship that RIT won in February, won the long jump (5.18 meters) and triple jump (10.80 meters). she was also fourth in the high jump (1.51 meters) and fifth in the javelin throw (29.51 meters).
RIT finished with a team score of 229.5 points, as Rensselaer won its second straight championship with 240 points.
Senior
Kendra Bush (Palmyra, NY/Newark) repeated as champion in the shot put, with a top throw of 12.60 meters. She also won the discus with a throw of 39.65 meters and was sixth in the hammer throw (40.16 meters).
Becca Schwan (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) won the 800-meter run by just under a second, hitting the finish line in 2:16.98. Schwan and Jones picked up 13 points for the Tigers in the 1,500-meters. Schwan finished second overall in a personal best time of 4:41.42, while Jones was fourth in 4:49.89. Jones was also second in the 5,000-meters with a time of 18:08.72.
The 4 x 400-meter relay team of
Ali Binga (Lockport, NY/Starpoint),
Amelia Brunner (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield), Schwan, and
Marissa Dispenza (Batavia, NY/Batavia) emerged victorious in a time of 4:02.75, winning by just over a second. The 4 x 100-meter relay team of
Emily Young (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Binga, Brunner, and Dispenza was third overall in 50.64 seconds.
Dispenza and DeAngelo led a 1-2 finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Dispenza crossed the line first in 15.43 seconds, while DeAngelo recorded a time of 16.04. DeAngelo bested Dispenza in the preliminaries by five one-hundredths of a second. Dispenza was also second in the 400-meter hurdles, re-breaking her own school record by three one-hundredths of a second in 1:04.66. Binga was third in the event with a time of 1:07.11.
Young was second overall in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 13.17 seconds.
Kaitlyn Houghtling (Elmira, NY/Thomas A. Edison) (13.36) was fifth, while
Darcy DeAngelis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) (13.62) was seventh. Young was also sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.11 seconds. Brunner was also sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:02.14).
Nicole Mackey (South New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) finished second overall in the 10,000-meters with a time of 39:23.63.
Martine Bosch (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 11:34.66.
On the field side, Calzolari led a 1-2-3 finish with Houghtling (5.18 meters) and DeAngelis (5.13 meters) in the long jump. The trio finished 1-2-4 in the triple jump. This time, DeAngelis 10.71 meters) was second, and Houghtling (10.33 meters) placed fourth.
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) placed sixth in the high jump (1.46 meters).
Samantha Kaplan (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) (2.98 meters), DeAngelo (2.83 meters), and Kimberly Kiefer (2.68 meters) recorded top-six finishes in the pole vault.
Madeline Pizzo (Irondequoit, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) was fifth in the shot put (11.40 meters).
Emily Zebrowski (Springville, NY/Springville) finished fourth in the hammer throw (43.56 meters), while
Julia Wojciechowski (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) (40.59 meters) was sixth.
The Tigers will potentially send a select few athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays next week in Philadelphia, Pa. On Saturday April 29, RIT will compete as a team at the Cardinal Classic hosted by St. John Fisher College, which gets underway at 10 a.m.
