Big second half lifts women's lacrosse to key Liberty League win at Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (8-6, 3-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team picked up a big win over Liberty League rival University of Rochester (8-4, 4-3 Liberty League) on Friday, defeating the host Yellowjackets 11-9 at Fauver Stadium. The Tigers scored four straight goals in the second half to break open what had been a close game to that point.

Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) each tallied six points on four goals and two assists to pace the Tigers. Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) scored two goals, while Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) grabbed four ground balls, won two draw controls and scored a goal. Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) got the win in net, making five saves. Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) also won three draw controls.

Jamie Wallisch led Rochester with four goals. Jamison Seabury tallied three goals, and Conley Ernst got the loss in net, making eight saves.

Trailing 2-1 early in the first half, RIT scored two straight goals, taking a 3-2 lead on Livecchi's tally off an assist from DaCosta at the 19:09 mark of the half. DaCosta tied the score with her conversion of a free position attempt at 23:56.

Wallisch scored two straight for the Yellowjackets, giving Rochester a 4-3 lead on her goal halfway through the half. Livecchi drew assists on consecutive goals by Ward at 5:54 and Fallone at 3:08 to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead late in the half. Seabury scored with 2:32 to tie the score at 5-5.

Livecchi opened the second-half scoring with her free position goal at the 21:48 mark. After Seabury tied it, the Tigers went on a four-goal run, taking a 10-6 lead on DaCosta's third of the game with 13:48 to play.

She started the run with her free position goal at 20:36 to make it 7-6 RIT. Fallone scored with 19:53 to play to make it 8-6, and Livecchi's goal with 18:44 to play gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead. DaCosta's goal would give the Tigers their largest lead of the game at four goals.

Wallisch broke the run with her goal with 13:23 to play, cutting the RIT lead to 10-7. DaCosta gave the Tigers an 11-7 lead on her fourth goal of the game with 6:15 to play. Wallisch and Danielle Diacovo would tally late goals for the Yellowjackets to pull closer, but it was not enough as RIT held on for the win to spoil Rochester's Senior Day and keep RIT in the hunt for a possible Liberty League playoff berth.

Shots were 24-22 in favor of Rochester. The Tigers won the ground ball battle, 17-11 and were 13-of-15 on clearing attempts. RIT won 7-of-22 draw controls and went 4-of-10 on free position attempts.

With the win, the Tigers move into a tie for seventh in the Liberty League, one game back of fourth-place Union who is in a three-way tie for the final playoff spot. The Tigers have two regular season games remaining. RIT returns to action next Friday, April 28 when the Tigers face the Dutchwomen at 4 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y.
