BROCKPORT, NY — The RIT (0-1) women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season with a 13-6 loss at No. 10 The College at Brockport (1-0) in warm, but windy conditions at Bob Boozer Field Wednesday afternoon.
Shots were 33-16 in favor of Brockport. RIT grabbed 10 ground balls, and cleared the ball on 10-of-18 chances. The Tigers were 1-of-6 on free position attempts, and won 10-of-21 draw controls.
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with a goal and two assists.
Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) tallied two goals, while
Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Maegen Schmauder and
Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) each scored. Schmauder and
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had two ground balls apiece.
Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) got the start in net, making five saves in the first half.
Rebekah Snitkoff (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) played the second half, making 11 saves.
Hannah Cullen led Brockport with four goals. Taylor Thomas tallied three goals and added an assist, while Jillian Babinsky scored two goals. Sarah Brown got the win in net for Brockport, making six saves.
RIT trailed 8-3 at the half. Shots were 14-5 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Brockport led 4-0 before Fallone scored her first collegiate goal at 18:43 of the first half of a feed from Livecchi.
Ward took the clearing pass in her own defensive end and went coast-to-coast for the goal, pulling the Tigers to within 5-2 with 11:01 to play in the half. Livecchi scored off an assist from Schmauder with 9:43 to play to cut the lead to 6-3. Brockport would tack on two more goals to take a five-goal lead into halftime. Cullen scored three goals for Brockport in the first half.
The Tigers scored three goals in the second half. Ward scored an unassisted goal early in the half to cut the Brockport lead to 9-4. Schmauder made it 10-5 Brockport with her goal off an assist from Livecchi at the 22:37 mark of the half. DaCosta scored with 16:27 to play in regulation to make it 10-6 Golden Eagles. That was as close as the Tigers had been to Brockport since the first half. The Golden Eagles tacked on three unanswered goals to make it a 13-6 final.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 4 when the Tigers host Lycoming College at 3 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field in its 2017 home opener.
