CANTON, NY –The RIT women's track and field team is finished third out of 13 teams at the 2017 NYSCTC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University at Newell Field House on Friday and Saturday. RIT finished with 108 points, while Ithaca College won the meet with 218.50 team points.
The Tigers won two relay events on the weekend. RIT's 4 x 200-meter relay team of
Ali Binga (Lockport, NY/Starpoint),
Emily Young (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster),
Kaitlyn Houghtling (Elmira, NY/Thomas A. Edison), and
Marissa Dispenza (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was victorious by 44 one-hundredths of a second on Friday in a time of 1:48.14. The 4 x 400-meter relay squad of Binga,
Amelia Brunner (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield),
Becca Schwan (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy), and Dispenza won by 25 one-hundredths of a second in 4:06.18, just missing a school mark.
Senior
Kendra Bush (Palmyra, NY/Newark) was the winner of the shot put, recording a victorious throw of 12.73 meters.
Senior
Jess Calzolari (Longmont, CO/Mead) was strong in the pentathlon, finishing second overall to national leader Kylee Bartlett of Rochester, while breaking her own school record in the high jump (1.61 meters).
Calzolari recorded a score of 3,234 points, which is currently the seventh best in all of Division III this season, while Bartlett tallied 3,398 points. Calzolari was second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.41 seconds), runner-up in the high jump (school record 1.61 meters), fifth in the shot put (9.92 meters), second in the long jump (4.98 meters), and second in the 800-meters (2:39.10).
Calzolari was also second overall in the triple jump with a leap of 10.79 meters.
Teammate
Madeline Pizzo (Irondequoit, NY/Our Lady of Mercy), the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week, was seventh in the pentathlon with a score of 2,570 points. She was also sixth in the shot put with a toss of 11.55 meters.
Samantha Kaplan (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) and
Jessica DeAngelo (Batavia, NY/Alexander) placed second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Kaplan had a season-best leap of 3.40 meters, while DeAngelo was right behind in 3.25 meters. DeAngelo also finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 9.76 seconds.
RIT's distance medley relay team of
Becca Schwan (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy),
Amelia Brunner (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield),
Martine Bosch (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell), and
Emma Jones (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) placed second overall to earn eight team points, finishing in a time of 12:27.17.
Schwan recorded a top-20 time in Division III this season, placing second in the 800-meters with a personal best run of 2:16.12.
Jones was fourth in the mile with a time of 5:13.13, while Bosch placed seventh overall in the 3,000-meters.
Dispenza was third in the 400-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 1:00.34 after recording the third best time in the prelims (1:00.04) on Friday.
Amelia Brunner (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield) recorded a seventh place finish in the 500-meters with a time of 1:21.44.
Houghtling and
Darcy DeAngelis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) placed fourth and fifth overall in the long jump. Houghtling had a top jump of 5.05 meters, while DeAngelis jumped 5.00 meters. Houghtling was also eighth in the triple jump.
RIT is back in action next Saturday, March 4, as they compete at the Tufts Last Chance Qualifier in Medford, Mass. at 11 a.m.
