DELAWARE, OHIO — The No. 3 RIT (1-0) men's lacrosse team needed three fourth-quarter goals to pull out a 12-11 win at No. 13 Ohio Wesleyan (0-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary) scored the game winner with 6:47 to play in the fourth quarter.
Shots were 47-43 in favor of Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers dominated at the face-off "X" winning 20-of-26 draws, and won the ground ball battle, 30-19. RIT cleared the ball just 11-of-20 times and committed 20 turnovers.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) led RIT with four points on two goals and two assists. Milburn and
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, ON/Crestwood Secondary High School) each scored twice and added a helper.
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) scored two goals, while
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) had a goal and an assist, and
Drew Tosaya (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor),
Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) and
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) each scored a goal. Ricci won 20 face-offs and also had a career-high 16 ground balls, while senior
Jon Berg (Chester, NJ/Mendham) picked up the win in net, making 11 saves.
Max Tennant led Ohio Wesleyan with three goals. Derek Todd tallied two goals and added an assist, while Conor Caffrey had a goal and two assists. Joey Sichenzia took the loss in net for the Battling Bishops, making nine saves.
RIT came out firing, leading 4-0 after the first quarter. Goals from Lee, Killen, Shuster and Milburn gave the Tigers the early advantage. Shots were 12-6 RIT after the first quarter, while the Tigers won all five face-offs.
Ohio Wesleyan came back with seven goals in the second quarter. RIT played defense the majority of the quarter, including being down a man for two minutes late in the frame. Levick scored two goals in the quarter, while Tosaya and Ricci each scored. Ricci's goal was a man-down goal, winning the face-off and scoring late in the quarter. Ohio Wesleyan fired 26 shots alone in the quarter, while RIT committed 11 turnovers.
The Battling Bishops kept the momentum heading into the start of the third quarter. Tennant tied the game with his goal at 12:41 of the quarter off an assist from Todd. Todd gave Ohio Wesleyan its first lead of the game, tallying with 4:09 to play in the third quarter. Wallace answered the two-goal run by the Battling Bishops, scoring with 49 seconds to play in the quarter, tying the game at 9-9.
Wallace opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with his second of the game off an assist from Levick 48 seconds in to give RIT a 10-9 lead. Killen made it 11-9 with his goal at 12:41, which was started by a big save by Berg on the defensive end. He got the ball out and started the Tigers fast-break up the field that led to Killen's goal.
After a Tennant goal cut the lead to 11-10, Milburn scored a man-up goal with 6:47 to play to give RIT a 12-10 lead. Ohio Wesleyan would not go away. Todd scored with 2:23 to play to make it a 12-11 Tigers lead. The Battling Bishops got the ball back inside the final seconds, but a shot by Tennant with two seconds to play was tipped wide by Berg and the Tigers held on for the win.
RIT went 2-for-2 on man-up, while holding Ohio Wesleyan to just one goal on four man-up tries.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they host No. 12 Stevenson University at 1 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
