FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The RIT wrestling team currently finished sixth out of 11 teams at the 2017 Citrus Open held at Cardinal Gibbons High School on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30.
Andrew Flanagan (Holley, NY/Holley),
Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) and
Alex Prunoske (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater Catholic) were place winners for the Tigers.
RIT finished with 60 team points. Augsburg College won the team title with 211 points, while Upper Iowa University was second with 195 points.
Winters went 4-1 on the weekend, finishing third at 157 lbs. to improve to 23-5 in 2017-18. He went 2-0 on Friday, opening the day with a pin in just 1:41 over Josh Verbeten of Augsburg before shutting out Nic Jarvis of CoCo, Winters lost to Ryan Epps of Augsburg in the semifinals before winning his two consolation matches to place third overall. He defeated Tyler Makosky of UNC-Pembroke, 3-0 and Raymond Jazikoff of New York University, 7-2 in the third place match.
Flanagan finished fourth overall at 125 lbs. Flanagan rolled to a win by pin in 5:45 over Maleek Williams of Upper Iowa University on Friday before falling to Matt Morris of Williams in the semifinals, 8-3 Saturday. Flanagan earned a 13-8 win in his first consolation both before falling in the third place bout.
Cutugno moved to 12-7 in 2017-18 after going 3-0 at 184 lbs. on Friday and 1-2 Saturday. He began the weekend with a 7-3 win over Joe Keller of Cornell College before earning a 9-2 win over Chris Washington of Williams in the round of 16. Cutugno punched his ticket to the semifinals after defeating Christian Hipsher of John Carroll, 14-0. Cutugno lost to Darian Edwards of UNC-Pembroke in the semifinals and dropped a consolation match before securing fifth place by defeating Dalton Hahn of Upper Iowa, 4-1..
Alex Prunoske (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater Catholic) placed sixth overall at 133 lbs. He lost his first match of the weekend, but secured a 7-6 win over Derek Gulotta of Ursinus in the consolation round of eight. He earned a pin over Blake Justis of Liberty on Saturday in the consolation round of four, before dropping his consolation semifinal and fifth place match.
Zach Stedeford (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) won three consolation matches, including one by fall at 149 lbs. to improve to 14-6 this season.
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) win four matches over the weekend, including three in the ninth-place consolation bracket Saturday at 165 lbs.
Wyatt Morris (Eaton, NY/Morrisville-Eaton) won one match at 285 lbs., while
Cole Murphy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) (149 lbs.) also earned a victory.
The Tigers are right back in action to kick off the new year on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the NY/PA Duals hosted by York College (Pa.). RIT will face Lycoming College at 1 p.m. and host York at 2:30 p.m.
