Men's basketball beats D'Youville in opening round of Brodie Tournament

RIT to face Oberlin College in Brodie Championship Sunday at 3 p.m.

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (2-1) men's basketball team defeated D'Youville College (2-2) 94-81 in the opening round of the 33rd Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament Saturday evening. The Tigers will face Oberlin College in the championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. D'Youville will face SUNY Cobleskill at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.

RIT shot 44.2 percent from the floor on 34-of-77 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-20 from behind the arc, and went 19-of-26 from the foul line. Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers. Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) and Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) both scored 19 points to lead the way. Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored 16 points, while Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) chipped in with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Charles Okehie (Owing Mills, MD/McDonogh) added 10 points.

Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden led D'Youville with 15 points, while Jake Socha scored 13 points. Simeon Heard and Juan Miguel Rosales each tallied 12 points for the Spartans, who shot 45.3 percent from the floor. RIT dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Spartans 53-35.

D'Youville led early in the first half, but a Rosser three gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead. Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) gave RIT a 13-8 lead on his bucket with 13:09 to play in the half. Darrius Hartzog capped off a D'Youville run with his bucket with 7:55 to play that gave the Spartans a slim 21-20 lead. RIT responded with a 12-3 run, taking a 32-24 lead on a Lewis jumper with 4:37 to play. Tied 38-38 late in the half, RIT outscored D'Youville 8-2 to lead 46-40 at halftime.

The Tigers opened the second half on a 12-6 run, taking their largest lead to that point, 58-46 on a 3-pointer from Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius). D'Youville answered back with a 17-4 run, taking a 63-62 lead on a bucket by Devon Camel with 10:50 to play in regulation. Rosser gave the Tigers as 12-point edge with a 3-pointer with 4:53 to play to give RIT a 83-71, capping off a 21-8 run. The Tigers out-scored the Spartans 48-41 in the second half.

RIT scored 36 points in the paint, and 29 second-chance points off of 22 offensive rebounds. The Tigers scored 29 points off of 16 D'Youville turnovers.

The win was RIT head coach Bob McVean's 499th at the university. He is in his 35th season at RIT.

RIT, winners of three of the last five Brodie Tournaments, will take on Oberlin in Sunday's title game at 3 p.m. Oberlin defeated Cobleskill, 80-77 in the opening contest Saturday.
