Box Score MENDON, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (2-1, 0-1 Liberty League) dropped its 2017-18 Liberty League opener, falling to William Smith College (2-0, 1-0 Liberty League) by a score of 5-4 at the Mendon Tennis Center Wednesday evening.
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was a winner at both first singles and first doubles for the Tigers. She earned a hard-fought three-set win over Michaelann Denton, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
William Smith won two of the three doubles matches to lead 2-1 heading into singles play. RIT's doubles point came at the first position, as the duo of Ying and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) defeated Denton and Dina Rigas, 8-6.
In singles play, RIT would battle to close the gap, but with each team winning three times, the final margin of victory would be one for William Smith.
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) continued her torrid start to her collegiate career, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Greenberg at fourth singles to tie the match at 2-2. Ying would cut the Herons lead to 4-3, but Leland Barclay secured the match with a victory at fifth singles.
Julia Smolowitz (Marlborough, MA/Hudson) would garner RIT's fourth point in the final match at sixth singles, defeating Katelyn Nguyen, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
RIT wraps up the fall season at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8 at Liberty League foe Skidmore.
