Volleyball wraps up 2017 season with split at New York State Regional Challenge

Sara Taylor named to the All-Tournament Team

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT volleyball team (14-18) wrapped up the 2017 season by splitting a pair of matches at the New York State Regional Challenge, hosted by the University of Rochester Saturday. RIT defeated Montclair St. University (13-19) in four sets, while falling to New York University (10-20) in three sets. Junior Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
In the opener against Montclair State, RIT dropped the first set, 27-25, before rallying to win the next three sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19. The Tigers recorded a season-high 76 points with 58 kills, while hitting .226. In addition, RIT recorded 14 service aces.
 
Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) recorded a career-high 28 kills, while hitting .315 in the match. Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) had a double-double with 20 digs and 15 kills, while Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 47 assists to go along with five digs and a block. Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) recorded a season-high six service aces to go along with seven digs, while Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) added five kills and three aces.
 
Schyler White led Montclair State with 11 kills and seven digs. Lily Scanzillo recorded 15 digs, while Ashley Griffith had 19 assists.
 
"After a slow start we found a really good rhythm for most of the rest of the match," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "During the rest of the match we played with good energy, focus and process. This was a really good effort."
 
NYU won the three sets in the final match of the day by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.
 
Taylor led the way with 11 kills, while hitting .261. Higgins hit .304 with 10 kills and six digs, while Sarah DelVecchio (Galway, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) added five kills and two blocks. Parkinson dished out 33 assists, while Marston added seven kills. Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield), playing in her final collegiate match, had eight digs, while Simonetti added seven.
 
Caroline Rapp hit .455 with 12 kills, six digs and three blocks, while Rayne Ellis hit .692 with nine kills. Jacqueline Kupeli had 12 digs, while Daryl Mitchell added 31 assists.
 
"We competed well this match," said Lodes. "Overall, we had a bounce back day today with our energy and process."
 
Higgins finished the season with a team-high 352 kills, while Parkinson dished out 997 assists. Bennett was the team-leader with 304 digs, while Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY/South Glens Falls) led the way with 47 blocks.
