Polanco's goal helps women's soccer clinch postseason berth with win at Ithaca

ITHACA, NY -- The RIT (11-3-2, 4-2-2 Liberty League) women's soccer team picked up a critical three points Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 win at Ithaca College (6-9-0, 3-5-0 Liberty League). Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) scored in the 85th minute for the Tigers to help vault them into fourth place in the Liberty League standings. With the win, RIT has clinched a Liberty League postseason berth for the sixth time in seven seasons.

Shots were 6-2 in favor of RIT. The Tiger took the only three corner kicks of the game. Polanco scored the RIT goal, while Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) dished out her team-leading ninth assist of the season. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net for the Tigers, while Stacey DiGiorgio took the loss for Ithaca, making three saves.

The game looked to be headed to extra time when Polanco scored off an assist from Thiel in the 85th minute. RIT's defense was stout not allowing a shot to get through on Rogers. It is the sixth shutout for Rogers this season.

RIT secured its first win over Ithaca since the 2012 season. The Tigers have now won 11 games in a season nine times in program history.

RIT is now riding a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1), having out-scored its opponents, 10-3 over that span. With one game remaining in the regular season, RIT can finish as high as second or as low as fifth in the league standings.

RIT closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. with a road contest at league foe Union College.
