ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team opens the 2017-18 regular season with a pair of games at The College of the Holy Cross on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7. Friday's contest begins at 7:05 p.m., while Saturday's game starts at 6:05 p.m.
RIT defeated Ryerson University by a score of 6-5 in its exhibition opener on Sept. 24. The Tigers scored five first period goals.
Stella Haberman (Golden Valley, MN/Minnesota Whitecaps) scored a pair of goals, while
Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline),
Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) and
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) had a goal and an assist apiece.
Baylee Trani (Huntington Beach, CA/New England Hockey Club) also scored, while
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard),
Ellie Larson (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson High School) and
Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) had a pair of assists apiece. In net,
Jessi O'Leary (Woodstock, New Brunswick/Athol Murray) picked up the win, stopping 11 of 12 shots in the first period.
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) played the second period, making nine saves, while
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped eight shots over the final 20 minutes of play.
The Tigers advanced to the College Hockey America Semifinals last season and return 17 players. Cornine led the team in scoring last season with 12 goals and 20 points. In net, de Jonge and Lanteigne shared most of the goaltending duties a year ago. Lanteigne had a 2.72 goals against average and a .918 save percentage, while de Jonge won four games, recorded a 2.88 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.
Holy Cross is joining Division I as an independent for the 2017-18 season and will join Hockey East in 2018-19. On Sept. 25, Holy Cross defeated Laurentian University in an exhibition, 7-0. Last season, the Crusaders went 22-5-0 as a Division II member, falling to Saint Anselm in the NEHC Open Championship. Kara Violette led the team in scoring last season with 19 goals and 35 points. Sam Girard and Julie Matthias added 17 and 13 goals, respectively in 2016-17. In goal, Tessie Salatas was 11-4-0 with a 1.37 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 10-3-1. The two teams last met in 2006-07, when both were members of the ECAC East.

After this weekend, the Tigers return home for six straight contests to close out October. RIT will host Rensselaer during Brick City & Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 13-14.
